I am not a fan of bugs at all. But silverfish and spiders are the two I have major issues with and those are very common in our area of south Minneapolis. We've had a pest control guy come every few months and last year that worked actually really well. But so far this year we are seeing more silverfish and spiders in our basement...which isn't that shocking since it's more dark and damp but that is where our bedroom is, our bathroom is, our laundry and closets are, and one of our living rooms.

Need some ideas from you all on here on deterring these things. I know silverfish and spiders are helpful in many ways...but not in the house. Are there home remedies that have worked for you? Certain pet-friendly products/sprays we can try?

When we first bought our house, it had wood shake shingles. Very “classy”, but after a few years, the wetness and age of the shingles created a perfect environment for silverfish. They eventually migrated to inside the house, mainly the top floor.

Following the silverfish, the spiders showed up. Target rich environment for them, and they also thrived. It became a bad situation when a day would not go by that I wasn’t killing 1 or more silverfish and 1 or more small spiders in the master bathroom.

Long story, but what we learned is that you have to be very aggressive in getting rid of the silverfish first.

I've had good luck with the bug bomb plan usually have to be out of the house for 12 hours or so depending on the bomb you get. I just get them at Menards. Also go around outside of the perimeter of your house with a Sevin type product that will help your perimeter.

Quasi unrelated but is getting an inspection costly?

Not bugs but I've heard mice in the walls. It's a condo so finding the source is tricky.

Like cockroaches when you turn the lights on! The house centipedes are what we have. We did have a mouse in the basement and set up glue traps. Was amazed at all those centipedes we caught in them.

Get a cat. Our cats kill any bug that dares come into the house. Just last week they killed a wolf spider that was probably the biggest I've seen. They'll even catch flies in mid air.
Bugs and mice. Mine killed 8 or so mice a few years ago.

I have heard that hedge apples keep spiders away. I think my wife tried it in the basement, but I don't recall if it worked.
