Since the "program changing victory" against Okie State in 2011…

I think what is more concerning is we fill the stadium, we have dumped millions into stadium and have a brand new football training facility. and are the same or worse than when we did all that.

Can't figure out where I am on the seven stages of grief (below) as it relates to the program right now. Probably at "bargaining" thinking to myself: "we have nicer facilities" "There are some guys in the NFL from recent rosters." "new SEZ" "We have a couple of 4 star recruits" "Mangino" etc. I feel depression coming. Acceptance and hope probably will accompany a coaching change and the whole damn cycle will start all over again!

7 Stages of Grief:
-Shock or Disbelief
- Denial
- Anger
- Bargaining
- Guilt
- Depression
- Acceptance and Hope

What is encouraging to me is that our next coaching search will be much different than going after an assistant from Pitt. Pre CPR our facilities were horrid. Post CPR our facilities are Power 5 comparable.. Makes a huge difference in who would look at coming to iowa st.

I get excited about those same things, but then I look around at the rest of the league, and college football in general, and see that everyone else is pouring millions into stadium and faciltiy upgrades (most already have and we're playing catch up), and getting 4-star recruits, etc. Then I get depressed again.

And as someone else pointed out, with all the millions we're spending, what happens if ticket sales and attendance start to decline due to results like yesterday? Could be a financial mess.

I mentioned this in a thread yesterday, but ISU is 1-7 at Jack Trice since moving to the new football facility/locker rooms. If ISU beats WV, UNI, Texas, TCU, and NDSU, all close games or FCS games in which you should always win at home, that number is 6-2, and their record since the Okie State game is 14-15.

Kansas doesn't count.

Who would have thunk thought that next step that we talked about for years would turn out to be a downward step

Acceptance is where I'm at. It's just apathy knowing we may squeak out 2 wins.

Then you watch a "young and rebuilding" Okie State go out and match FL State punch for punch and depression really sets in.

One thing that has not happened under CPR that did under MAC that kept the fans coming was Mac was able to always bring in an elite player on offense I.e. Davis bros. and Seneca. Etc..

our QB play the past 2-3 years has just been horrid IMO. We either need a really good oline to protect a below avg qb or we need a star at qb who can make great plays on his own. I do feel Steel J could have been that guy but CPR destroyed his confidence so....

Funny how I posted in the middle of last season how Rhoads didn't belong as our coach because he can't win and can't recruit and everything else. People said I was a troll and stupid and now everyone agrees. Rhoads simply isn't the right guy to move the program forward. In fact, he's made our program worse than it was in the Dan McCarney days.

Lol do you even remember the DMac days?

Since the Okie Lite win in 2011 we have (bolded the two that I find most disturbing):

- 2 bowl losses, each by 14 points.
- The biggest loss in ISU football history
- A 1-2 record against FCS opponents
- A 1-9 record against ranked opponents. TCU was the only ranked win, although they ended the season unranked.
- Failed to put up more than 20 points in 14 of our 29 games.
- Given up at least 30 points in 14 of our 29 games.
- A 20% winning percentage against conference opponents
- Only 4 home victories (Western Illinois, Tulsa, Baylor, Kansas)
- A -194 point differential in 20 conference games.
wow, way to go Rhodes

The number are not pretty:
9-20 overall, 6-17 vs BCS teams
Average -9.2 point differential vs BCS Teams
1 win (vs Iowa 2012) when scoring less than 34 points
2 loses to FCS teams

On a positive note 2-1 vs Tulsa :psmile:

It's not like he did anything before November 18, 2011 that was earth-shatteringly good, either. Let's recap...

2009: rides a ridiculously soft schedule to his only winning season, courtesy of a one-point bowl victory over Minnesota.

2010: fails to become bowl-eligible, suffering two shutouts and a thrashing by Utah. The team's "signature" win was at Texas, who ended up going 5-7 (2-6 conference).

2011: thanks to coming out on the right side of a few squeaker games against bad teams, ISU is just five points removed from an 0-7 start to the season. Somehow crushes Texas Tech and ekes another close win out against Kansas before the Oklahoma State upset.

It must have taken some real wizardry to spin that as "progress".

Valid point but WHO was responsible for giving the coach a decade long contract? It wasn't the fans. IF this is the end of the CPR era and JP is given the opportunity (and not shown the door) to hire a third HC I'll be utterly disappointed.

The fans are kinda responsible for the contract. We all kept filling seats and buying tickets. If "fans" quit doing that and stop believing all the hype every year, then maybe it would send a message.

P.S. Im not saying boycott the football team, but to not put any of this on the fans is ignorant.

Looking at those #'s honestly...why is Rhoads still employed. Think if those were the stats for say Texas Tech or West Virginia we would want the admin at that school to keep their coach so we could get a win every year.

Probably because we are Iowa State. I bet you could pull similar trends throughout our history.

And then you notice the fight in WVU against Alabama. I know KU was resting, but Iowa was probably the least impressive of all our opponents this week.

With 20/20 hindsight the 10 year deal looks foolish. But after the 2011 season, when it was extended, it was probably warranted.

PR was coming off two bowls in his first three years and beating OSU and his other upsets. It seemed that he had ISU going the right direction. Even 2012 was not too much of a disappointment, as long as he kept improving.

Of course we're living through a major downslide can see now it may have been smoke and mirrors.

I'll give him this year and see if there's any real improvement. Otherwise....

...this comment will get burned, but so far Gene Chizik is CPR's most productive assistant.

Otherwise it's been pretty messy, with a lack of discipline, poor performances and lots of labels/euphemisms for 'We don't have very much talent'.

I agree with most everything here, BUT 2012 REALLY disappointed me. You had a defense with like 5(?) all conference players on it along with a lot returning on offense, and they go 6 and freaking 6? Then show no heart in the bowl game and get smashed to finish out the year.

At the time, Rhoads contract was completely warranted IMO. Rhoads had shown that ISU could do a little of everything with him at the helm, and it had been a pretty exciting and unpredictable 3 seasons. I feel that all signs pointed to ISU needing to retain him at all costs back then.

I really think he's got until the end of 2015 to get this legitimately turned around or he needs to go. ISU unfortunately is young again this year and we'll see LOTS of growing pains, just like last year. On paper ISU returns a lot next season. That will probably be his saving grace going into 2015, but it's put up or shut very soon IMO.

Okay what the **** does it take for Iowa State to win 8-10 games consistently in your opinion?
