Wonder if that'll affect how teams will look at them as transfer candidates? If a guy quits on their current team, can you trust them to come in and not ruin team chemistry? But I'm sure there will still be plenty of suiters. But likely of teams that consistently underperform based on their talent level. So I'd expect these guys to land in Austin.

But as for SMU, I assume this would mean that their stipend and food service plan gets cancelled for the remainder of the semester?

Not surprising. It will really only work for players that have begun to prove themselves as worthy of a transfer. It’s somewhat like NFL drafters skipping bowl games. Everyone hoped it would wane after being looked down upon but it really hasn’t been.

Yeah if they know they have proven enough to land somewhere better/different, I think it will spread. From underperforming teams of course.

How does sitting out benefit transferring? King had to sit out last year(not by choice) and he still has to sit out first semester this year. Or did they not play at all this year?

KIng had to deal with 2nd transfer rules. They are probably OK with 1st transfer.

But do they retain a year of eligibility for sitting out? I guess I’m assuming they can RS if only played in four games?

I think that’s why they’re sitting now, to red shirt this year. Otherwise there is no benefit to sitting out even id you know you’ll transfer.

It's one of the byproducts of the asinine immediate eligibility rules. The bleeding hearts who wanted that flippin rule were too stupid to comprehend all of the unintended consequences.
Why should adult athletes be treated differently than adult coaches on where they want to be?

I’m sure schools would be willing to have the players pay a buyout like coaches have to(or the new school pay the buyout). Might cause some problems if they decide to transfer and have to eat the money themselves if a bigger school doesn’t want them though, especially if they have to transfer down a level.

I don't see this as an unintended consequence at all. I have zero issue with a player using the existing rules to their own maximum benefit.

Like the article says, SMU has taken advantage of the portal to acquire players. Well, the portal giveth and the portal taketh away.

When we have an epidemic of coaches quitting midseason maybe that should be addressed as well.
Why would that matter. Adult athletes only get X years to play, adult coaches get, essentially , as many years to coach as they please. To spin it back, should we only allow coaches 4-5 years to coach.

Adults making decisions for themselves is exactly what we need more of in college athletics.

Making decisions inside of those rules should be applauded.

Old enough to mess up a team they committed to, but not old enough to buy alcohol or tobacco.
