So what happens to ISU Wrestling

If conferences aren't important to wrestling, then I'm curious why a couple of wrestling-only conferences were formed, and why other schools (if their conference does not sponsor wrestling) join a different conference that does have wrestling (see the Pac-10 link I posted earlier) just to be part of a conference for wrestling?

Regarding resources, the EWL (Pitt and WVU) and the EIWA (lots of Ivy Leaguers) certainly have members with financial resources.

EWL Wrestling
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)

According to NCAA Sports Sponsorship,

these are the Division I wrestling independents. As far as size and resources, ISU would seem to be out of place in that group...

Campbell University
Duquesne University
Gardner-Webb University
Liberty University
North Dakota State University
University of Northern Colorado
University of Northern Iowa
South Dakota State University
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
U.S. Air Force Academy
Utah Valley University
University of Wyoming

It would be interesting to hear KJ's comments about ISU being and independent...

If ISU is forced to a smaller conference, forced into less revenue, forced into budget cuts, forced into cutting a program. Wrestling will be the first to go (Thanks Title 9 cuz women's sports are really bringing in the bacon!). It would really be a shame to see one of the top wrestling programs go under thanks to title 9 and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

This will never happen. Not a chance. I would think there are a few other sports that would be cut before Wrestling would.

I never did believe any of this conspiracy crap from the 1980s. Our school administration simply needs to be behind athletics. A new governor is not going to change that. Plus, he can't play games with an electorate base he needs: predominately republican cyclones versus liberal eastern iowa hawks.

Yeah, ISU administration never got behind our athletic programs in order to give them the facilities to compete. But who was responsible for putting our administration in place? The regents. Who was responsible for slashing just about everything at ISU? The regents. Who was in charge of the regents? Pomerantz. And he CLEARLY had no love for ISU...

Taking this in a little different direction, the Pac-10 wrestling members are:

Arizona State
Boise State
Cal Poly
Cal State Bakersfield
Cal State Fullerton
Oregon State
Stanford
UC Davis

Three regular Pac-10 plus some others...there is apparently some benefit to having some additional teams beyond the regular conference members.

If the Big 12 survives, would there be any benefit in the Big 12 adding UNI, and perhaps NDSU and SDSU for wrestling? They are geographically close. Might that boost the number of conference qualifiers for nationals?

It all depends how things play out - if you end up in the Big East, there are three schools with wrestling Pitt, WVU, and Rutgers (assuming RU doesn't go the B10). If you add ISU and Mizzu (if they don't go to the B10), you have five teams. You have five teams now in the B12. If you go to the MWC, you have Wyoming, and Air Force. If you add ISU and Mizzu (assumption) you have four teams. There are lots of options for wrestling, and we would not have a problem scheduling meets.

Per the B12 by-laws, there shouldn't even be a championship for wrestling because six teams in the conference don't offer the sport, but it was grandfathered in when the conference was formed. Gymnastics was the same way. Note the last line "pending further review". My take - if the B12 survives - the Texas schools dominate swimming/diving, so they will stay, only one south school competes in gymnastics, it would be dumped, only two south schools compete in wrestling, it would probably survive.

Conference Championship Sports Requirements
. In order for the Big 12
Conference to host a championship, that sport must include six institutions
that satisfy “continuity of membership.” In order to meet the “continuity-of
membership”
requirement, a minimum of six institutions that sponsor the sport

on a varsity intercollegiate basis must conduct conference competition together
in Division I. Additionally, the NCAA must conduct a championship in the sport.
(Note: The sports of wrestling, women’s gymnastics and men’s swimming & diving
are “grandfathered” and retain championship status pending further review.)

Just a couple of things...

Pitt and WVU are members of the EWL and Rutgers is a member of the EIWA for wrestling, If the Big East were to add wrestling, those schools would have to leave those conferences, provided five teams are enough to add a sport per Big East bylaws. Otherwise, I suppose ISU could join EWL.

Same thing with the MWC. AF and Wyoming are independent, Boise St. (who appears to be going to MWC) is currently wrestling in the Pac-10. If permitted by the MWC bylaws, the conference could add wrestling.

I was thinking about this when I made the post above about the Big 12 adding UNI/SDSU/NDSU for wrestling. Would that satisfy the Big 12 bylaws?

The Big East by-laws are horrible to try to find anything. It would probably be easier for ISU to join one of those conferences.

As for the other schools joining the B12 for wrestling - hard to tell since they've never dealt with it before. I guess the question becomes do those three schools feel they can be competitive against ISU and possibly Mizzu.
