Even counting HBO? I realize Euphoria is an Israeli adaptation but the quality on HBO for 2+ decades now has to be the historic gold standard for serialized fiction on film.

For network tv (and a lot of Netflix content) I’d agree and the trend is for it to keep getting worse.

HBO has good stuff, I admit, but also some real turnips (which is what the French call movies & shows that are "dogs"). Take the "Sex & the City" reboot. Please.

I do appreciate Netflix offering foreign films/shows. Unfortunately, Europe tends to yoink permissions. For example, one of the very finest on Netflix was a French series "Witnesses". It was stunning, but disappeared after two seasons.

I just checked, Prime is offering it with a subscription to PBS Masterpieces. That's probably what I hate the most...having to pay for service after service. Prime is also pretty mean about charging to watch recent films. Yikes. $20 a pop now for first-run. I admit, I can't drive RT to a movie theater and buy the ticket for that price, but still, I am forking over a chunk every month to Prime. I dislike their "try some, buy some" manipulations.

One of the best places I'm finding for foreign films is Tubi. Free with commercials. Can't beat that with a stick.

Welcome to flatch is pretty funny...kind of dumb but I get a laugh out of it
Watched Ep 1 and kept thinking, "Man, Stifler got old." Then I looked in the mirror and cried a little as I'm 5 months older than him.

I know it's based on a British show, but it has a little of Parks and Rec meet Letterkenny vibes.

I just record most PBS Masterpiece stuff live via YoutubeTV and then watch it recorded. What I don't catch that way, I watch on Plex. PBS Masterpiece is pretty well the entirety of what I watch on actual TV.

You really can't blame services for trying to profit from their own content. Previously they were just letting the likes of Netflix control streaming, to their detriment. Now, with more and more people cutting the cord, everyone is taking control of their own content and trying to maximize profits. Twenty years ago, you'd have been paying $100/month for cable or satellite and then renting or buying movies, so ultimately the different streaming services are still about the same if you're cutting the cord.

It's all shorts and been around for a while but I'm going to check out 'Joe Pera Talks to You' when I get the chance.

Yes! Very niche humor, but Season 1 and Season 2 are hilarious, quirky and introspective. Season 3, I'll have to rewatch, but it seemed like it leaned more heavily on the introspective part and less on the hilarious...pandemic vibes I guess. Regardless. I hope it gets a Season 4...love Joe Pera!

He's going to be at the Hinterland Campfire Stage on Thursday night: LINK I don't camp, but it would be almost worth getting one night just to see him.

I do that, too, but the French series is not currently being shown on Iowa PBS.

Not new, but we're on the third season of "Bordertown", a Finnish crime series on Netflix. The hero is gifted and somewhere on the spectrum, using his talents to deduce who is guilty and why. Great show. Most of the Nordic Noir is outstanding, including "Chestnut Man", and "Trapped" (Iceland). Also enjoyed "Marcella" from the UK. European television is so much better than American schlock (I'm talking the dreadful "Mrs. Maisel"), there is just no comparison.

Agree with Euro productions. Just started watching The Last Kingdom which I'd heard recommended but never tuned in till a few weeks ago. Thought I was Saxon and Viking storied out but, nope. Started out slow but after a few episodes I was hooked. Half way through season 2 and wondering if the last three season, after Netflix purchase, is as good as the episodes I've watched so far. Hoping so.

I liked Peacemaker a lot more than I thought I would and I'm really not even into the superhero genre.

Into Season 4 now. Agree.

"Destiny is all!"

A good example too of a show based on a series of books where the show is much better than the books. I tried reading the books and honestly they just aren't that good. The show moves really, really quick and the books kind of drag.

Didn't think Abbott Elementary would be worth the time but this thread convinced me to give it a shot. Safe to say I was sleeping on it cause 5 episodes in and I'm trying to talk myself out of finishing the first season in one day. Easy watch that's full of laughs and a lot of heart to boot.
