It's a smart move. I may or may not have interest in the aforementioned company, but DSM-STL is a route that no major carrier is operating at this time. I would imagine SWA will start with farely cheap 1-way deals, hopefully $49 or 79.

DSM isn't a big market obviously, but I think this does more to keep SWA in DSM when compared to keeping the DSM-MDW routes. Very congested and the load factors were pretty awful due to that route already being capitalized by others. STL is a pretty big market for SWA, and I think they will continue to grow, plus it is a nice airport considering.

Get ready, April 12th is kickoff date. I personally enjoy it more as its much easier for me to go DAL-STL-DSM compared with DAL-MDW-DSM.

google.com/flights lets you set up alerts and tracks the price of the flight if you pick a date. Handy if you go to the same place often and around the same time.

Tried about 10 different sites and they all offer about the same rates. I'll keep checking every few days as I'm not in a hurry to book.

The prices will go up the more you search for the same destination. Find the flight using one device and book from another.

I use Southwest when they fly where I need to go/leave from (and are affordable), but otherwise use kayak.com. And always search using Incognito mode.

"Southwest said it will end service to Chicago Midway International Airport from Des Moines when service to St. Louis begins."

Does this NOT mean SW will stop flying to Midway from DSM when they start going to St. Louis?

Southwest will stop flying between Des Moines and Chicago Midway when DSM-STL service begins. But Southwest is not dropping Chicago Midway entirely.

So flying in and out of DSM on Southwest will result in St. Louis connections instead of Chicago connections.

...It seems pretty clear cut, no?

Ugh. Nice for STL people, but I can only imagine this means...

1.) maybe DSM is struggling slightly as a market for them, with some much competition to Chicago routes (the biggest O/D point in the Midwest and from Des Moines), though the addition of the Las Vegas flight some time ago makes me think that isn't incredibly likely, hopefully

2.) MDW has wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more flights and linkages for Southwest than will STL, and particularly with their new international connections only going out of a few of their main airports (MDW, BWI, HOU, maybe ATL or MCO in the South or LAX or something on the West Coast)

3.) running a "monopoly" on the DSM/STL link means this might be a little more on the pricey side, though DSM is substantially cheaper now than a few years ago, whew

Sucks for me, though. Just when they spool up at DCA, with 8-10 DCA/MDW flights a day (an easy link back into Iowa) they switch it over to STL, which only has 2-3 flights from DCA or Baltimore per day. That makes the potential combinations for connections less available. Selfish of me, but seeing them switch *one* of the flights to St. Louis or maybe just adding one to STL would have been nice.

Go Frontier, crazy cheap to Denver.

Living in Denver, frontier used to be my airline, but they are now a last option. They nickel and dime you. Have to pay for a carryon, have to pay extra to pick your seat. I'm tired of their BS. I'd fly SW every time if I could.
