Fake turf is an abomination to football and should be outlawed. Last season was an outlier. The only other time i remember issues with the field was when it was at the end of it's run a few years ago and they knew they were replacing it in the offseason. I can't believe anyone would wish for a plastic field at The Jack.
Agreed. The issue at the end of the season last year was the team's desire to play being less than the team they were playing. Good ol' power football would have quickly put the game out of reach against Drake if the will had been there. Keep the grass and use it as an advantage, not an excuse.

Eh, field turf isn't all that bad.

Better than astroturf at least.

But I like how ISU has real grass and hope it stays for a long time.
But if CMC ever requests field turf, it'd better be on there within the next week.

This was emailed Friday (19) from Athletics:
The Iowa State Athletics Department has some significant construction projects beginning this Spring. The weather is finally going to allow us to break ground and begin this work.

The construction will disrupt parking (specifically lots 85W & 85E) near the Bergstrom Football Complex, Jacobson/Olsen Building, and Jack Trice Stadium.

Lot 85W

  • Beginning Monday, April 15, work will begin in Lot 85W and the parking lot will be fenced off by the contractor.
  • This lot is expected to be out of service the entire period of construction of the Sports Performance Center.
Lot 85E

  • Work on the expansion of lot 85E to accommodate those individuals currently parking in 85W will begin in two weeks and be closed for a majority of the spring/summer. Lot 85E will be completed prior to the 2019 fall sports season.
Other items

  • The drive lane west of Olsen will remain open during construction for deliveries and access to the Ticket Office.
  • There will also be a period of time this summer that access up to the west concourse of Jack Trice will be prohibited from the NW hillside.
Parking recommendations

We recognize daily parking will be an inconvenience during this construction and appreciate your patience. There are a number of alternate parking options within the vicinity.

These options include:

  • Commuter parking lots: A4, B6 & C6
  • Lot S8 (after spring semester is complete)
During this period of construction, please refrain from parking on sidewalks or drive lanes near the buildings.

Given the limited amount of access in and around the buildings, these lanes will be used by contractors and working staff.

Thanks, in advance, for your patience and cooperation.

How about new FieldTurf ? The grass looks amazing in September, yet declines in October and looks horrendous in November---and the playing conditions are awful.

Iowa can drop $500K replacing their 2-yr old stuff- at the drop of a hat.

We're afraid to offend our agronomy/turf management folks. Good lord. We almost lost to Drake because of our crappy field ion Dec 1 2018.

We almost lost to Drake because one team was excited to play football and cared/worked their butts off. The other team went through the motions.

Remember the bad field doesn't just affect one team.

The lots need resurfaced C5 is a mess
Yep, they do. Have heard the $$$ amount to do the lots is VERY high. Also a bit of a battle between Athletics and the University on who has to pay for what.

I wonder what the trickle down effect will be for tailgate parking with 85-W closed. How many of those people will go across the street to A-4 and bump others?

Hardly a 'dead horse' issue.

Bringing back 'baseball', is a 'dead horse' issue, when it's financially unwise and would require a $20 million investment in a new stadium, scholarships, and roster to compete w/ Texas/OU etc.

A sh#tty playing surface for 1/2 the FB season in a Power 5 D1 football conference is not a 'dead horse' issue, when it's an ongoing, relevant problem every season

Most D3 schools have Field turf (Coe; Cornell, et al). Many high schools have Field turf.

RB Kene, for example, had at least 2 potential runbacks/returns for TD's nullified because he slipped on that crappy field. Watch the tape

Last time I checked, Drake didn't have a "Kene" on their roster
Half of the NFL’s stadiums have natural grass playing surfaces.

Does anyone know how long it has been since the lots have been completely resurfaced? is it the same asphalt that was put down in 1971? The resurfaced lots north of Hilton are nice. Seems as though athletics and the entire university will benefit from resurfacing.

the uni dome isn't really artificial turf as its more padded carpet, or what the barnstormers use at wells. Ill vote to keeping even a ****** natural grass field then ever having to play on carpet. At least this was from playing in semi finals for HS back in 2011, so they may have updated since then to actual astro turf at the dome since?

No I've been on it since the fall. It's still super crappy.

Most professional outdoor sports are played on grass. Baseball....Not a single MLB team that plays primarily outdoors has field turf.

All World Cup soccer games are now required to be played on grass.

Granted, there are issues about the season, the weather, etc., but most professional athletes want to play on real grass and most professional organizations seem to prefer it.

Artificial surfaces are clearly more dangerous also. I don't know why we'd subject our players to that when we should be pointing out in recruiting that we actually care for our players at ISU as opposed to the schools with artificial surfaces...

Remember that the north and east and just south of Hilton lots were done to provide much more parking for donors, with numbered spots. We have a spot in the north lot for WBB, and I wish the snow removal drivers will be much more thorough (rather than quick) in years to come. I realize adding all those sign posts get in the way of quick snow plowing and moving, but that's not my fault. I still want to be able to drive easily into my end of row spot and get out without stepping in thigh high snow piles.
