Staff changes have hurt the football program.

TCU had staff turnover on offense. Look what they have done this year. We were so bad last year it is kinda mind boggling we haven't improved much at all really. I expected September to be a slow start, but I thought the offense would at least make strides by November, which they have not.

Or you could have mentioned the three year emphasis that they have placed on recruiting offense because they saw what it takes to win in this conference, like Patterson has told anyone that would listen. But that wouldn't fit the agenda, would it?

How is Rhoads' challenge any more severe than any manager in any profession that has to hire and manage a staff of nine people?
Yep. I just do not see much football acumen built into the undersized young ones. I agree that they are not physically strong enough if thrown on the field, but they do not seem to have a sense on how to play smart. That is coaching. Playing on the field should not be as difficult as over running the ball, letting the opponent get behind you, getting blocked and just going with the flow, turning the wrong direction, forgetting to contest the receiver, diving for the football on a pass, not running smack dab into the pile when you know it will not move.

Staff turnover has always been one of our biggest challenges and you can go all the way back to 70's.

This is so true. This is a program that has seen the likes of Jimmy Johnson, Pete Carroll, and Mack Brown roll in and out of town.

The Pinstripe Bowl decision to promote Messingham to OC looks to be the genesis of the current trouble, at least on the offensive side of the ball. Check yourself if you don't believe the troubles on O haven't taken their toll on the D, especially over the course of a season. If CPR is still 'the guy', then I pray that Mangino sticks around and agrees to an extension. I think he'll pay dividends on the recruiting trail if he does stick to us. My biggest fear for this off season is that he gets hired away and the cycle is doomed to repeat - 4th OC in 5 seasons regardless if CPR keeps his job or not.

I never liked the Bobby Elliot (football gypsy) hire and the secondary coaching carousel has been spinning since his hire. Can't blame anyone for Curtis Bray's tragic end. By all accounts Shane is a good recruiter and the lead on some of our better players. I can't believe Wally's credentials of putting LBs in the NFL is anything but a positive. I can't begin to explain why we have, for seemingly the second straight season, such a young and inexperienced defense though. The pipeline has stalled so to speak in terms of getting JR/SR talent to take over instead of FR/SO.

The league got tougher after the realignment instability and I don't doubt all that turmoil about ISU being 'left out' exactly helped the situation. ISU has had a national top 10 "toughest schedule" for all of recent memory. This conference is no joke and getting someone to take the reigns and stick around is going to be tough. At ISU we are going to take our lumps every now and again when classes don't pan out, that's the nature of this league and our spot in it. It's been said over and over, but we were very late to join the arms race of major college football, and I believe we have barely begun to see the fruits of the FB facilities creation and upgrades. And we'll likely never 'catch up' no matter how much money is pumped into the program.

ISU FB is in a very fragile place right now, and as a fan, this depresses me most.

And we can still beat Iowa in our darkest hour.

You're pretty well on point here. But when has Iowa State football ever not been in fragile place?

And no we're never going to catch up. But we can minimize the disadvantage.

People are stuck on the anti coach thing, I'm not. JP could call the Applebee's call in show and fire him tonight for all the it's the coach folks. But until the commitment is made, anyone we can reasonably hire will either hit and run to a better job quickly, or more than likely, we'll just be same position but 5 years down the road.

The last time I had confidence in a team was back in 2005. Always felt those guys could do it.

You also could mention that this offensive recruiting binge has been extremely effective for TCU because they are bringing in some highly talented players.

At the end of the day staff turnover doesn't mean much to a program that is loaded with talent. It means far more to a program that is severely deficient in the talent department. If you put the ISU offensive staff on the Alabama sidelines how do you think the Crimson Tide would be doing offensively? They would be quite good. If you put the Alabama offensive staff on the ISU sideline how do you think the Cyclones offense would be doing? They would still be pretty poor.

At the end of the day it all comes down to talent.

We'd all be wearing gold diapers if Woody Hayes hadn't lost it and punched that Clemson LB. Probably playing in Earle Bruce Family Memorial Stadium.

I've got a fever and the only prescription is EARLE BRUCE.
