I have recently started to wonder if Lanning does have the job locked up for this season. For the most part i have thought it was a sure thing. There hasn't been anything out there to say differently, but there are just a couple of things that I have been thinking about.

The first is something really small, but there has been a lot of clips in the videos that the coaching staff has put out of Park. Doesn't really mean anything. They very well could just be taking the shots that look the best and they happen to be him.

The biggest point I was thinking about was actually about 2017. The coaching staff seems to really like Park. If they are planning on him taking over next year, it could end up being tough if the team has some success this year with Lanning. This is something that they would probably welcome, but at the same time, it could cause chemistry issues for the team if they make the change.

In a perfect world I would hope that they really do keep it an open competition and see what these guys can really do. I really like Lanning, but if Park beats him out, that is even more impressive in my mind. Either way I feel more confident in the QB position than I have for 6 years

This happened at Toledo. Alabama QB transfers to Toledo. Difference is he won job. But, got hurt week 2. Backup was very successful for 10 games. Next year, they redshirt the backup and start the transfer. Bottom line is the best player will play whether it's week 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,or 12. It's the way it works for all other positions, why not QB. IN FACT, I would be shocked if both don't play quite a bit.

I am fine with having the best guy play. I would just rather have that decided going into the first game of the year. There is something about the team knowing who the leader is that I like. It is harder if there are 2 QBs. It can also get QBs to play too tight or play too reckless. Lanning seemed to win over a lot of the players last year after the switch. Everyone seemed to get almost a second wind when the switch was made. That being said Park would just need to prove it with his game, and there shouldn't be too much issue with that if he is the better QB.

Isn't Lanning the front man on the official poster?

I think so. He was also one of the ones sent down to media days....like I said all signs point to Lanning, but I over analyze everything when I am this ready for football to start

New staff, new system, new playbook. IMO when there is a head coaching change no players job is safe. Sometimes a players skills don't translate to what the new staff is trying to do.

Lanning was good not great last year, so if Park outplays Lanning in fall practice, he's gonna start.

IMO the guys guaranteed to start are: Lazard, Warren, Tucker Cotton-Moya and Downing. Guys who are 80% or better chance of starting are: Campos, Philbert, Harvey, Peavy, Payne and Netton. My guess there will be a handful of surprise starters for UNI.

DAMN I'm excited for football!

Agreed, Whomever wins the competition will be backed by the players if their first interest is winning games.

Toledo's offense did not really resemble anything that we have watched here (in Ames) for the last ten years (speaking as a comparison to what Iowa State has been running anyway). In 3 and a half quarters of football, Toledo's QB ran with the ball twice. Once on a rollout, he ran to the sidelines; and, once on a 3rd and 6, he ran for 7 and slid. The QB looked fresh as he directed the offense (not gassed, or dinged up). For a team that has a reputation for running the ball, Toledo passed alot. They seemed to like to move the RB into a slot position and go with an empty backfield (on occasion). The passing game was mostly "down field" and not so much "sideways".

A consistent comment that I have heard (over the last month and a half), is that Jacob Park has really been a vocal leader during conditioning workouts.

Our QB's have ran a lot the past couple of years, but it was mostly out of necessity. They were running for their life.

Hopefully with improved OL play, that changes. I am not so confident it will this year.

Toeldo didn't have a QB that could run and is basically a LB..Lanning is great at running zone read..it's all he did at Ankeny. He's an asset running the football. The good news is if Park is as good as some say he is then the staff won't hesitate to see Lanning running the ball as much..My guess is we will see both QBs play..I don thin it will be a rotational thing but I think Park will get in games.

No coach really wants a two qb system. Leadership from 1 player is critical for team success on offense. Lanning getting the majority of reps with the 1st offense will be important. If Park is better, he will start. A coach plays the player that gives the offense the best chance to score. The are no hurt feelings. It's a business decision. I personally am rooting for the Iowa kid.... I think the combination of Lanning/Lazard taking the Cyclones to 2 bowl games would be an amazing story and really cement recruiting Iowa athletes.

It's Lannings job to lose. If he comes into Fall practices prepared and ready to go physically, I can't see Park taking it from him. Then it will come down to play on the field the first couple of weeks.

You can't play football that way. What crazy new offense is he bringing here?

I would certainly recommend watching film of Toledo's offense. Coach Campbell is bringing his "system" here. He brought along nearly all of his coaches. I do not think that he is going to now change the offense that he has run the last 4 years. Yet, so many here seem to think that we are going to be running a version of the type of offense that has been run here in the past. I would suspect that the QB that starts is the QB that can best run Coach Campbell's offense.

Coaches run the offense they know best. The current state of college offensive football is RPOs(Run/Pass option) and it is very effective at controlling aggressive defensive players, running wr into voids, and making the defense wrong. I guarentee CMC will have this as his base offense. Coaches also taylor their Offense to their best players. I'd expect heavy run (rpo) wit play action based on ISU's 3 best offensive weapons (warren, lazard, lanning).
