Any offense at Toledo was Coach Campbell's offense and that includes when he was OC before being head coach.

I read you the first time. Campbell is being incredibly vague about his formations and play calling. He could do the same thing he did at Toledo but I think he would be incredibly foolish to do so.

Why would that be foolish?? In fact, his offensive philosophy is a big part of why your AD liked him so much if I remember correctly. With less talent his offensive was able to put up good numbers year after year and competed quite well against bigger schools. With the ability to now recruit better talent, I would suggest his offense will be just fine against the Big 12. In fact, I think it's the key to success by keeping these opponent offenses off the field by using a combination of power running and an effective passing game which takes occasional shots down the field.

Because we don't have the personnel to push people around yet. Also our skill players are very different from what he had there. Lastly it would mean every body and their brother knows what's coming. I think in three years maybe but right out the gates I don't think so.

This happened at Toledo. Alabama QB transfers to Toledo. Difference is he won job. But, got hurt week 2. Backup was very successful for 10 games. Next year, they redshirt the backup and start the transfer. Bottom line is the best player will play whether it's week 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,or 12. It's the way it works for all other positions, why not QB. IN FACT, I would be shocked if both don't play quite a bit.

I agree and it is also a reason why nearly every coach declares an open competition and makes sure the backup gets plenty of snaps in practice. The backup is one play away from being the starter.

There's probably a happy medium here. CMC might not run exactly the same sets and formations, but he's not going to throw his offensive philosophy out the window either. We're probably going to see a run heavy scheme that sets up play action. He'll tailor his offense to the personnel he has to work with for now and as he acquires players that fit his schemes better he'll implement more over the next few years.

it's not like the coaches want to have a QB carousel... I'm sure they wanted Jantz, Barnett, and Richardson to all work out... it's what ISU Does.

Yeah, I get that. I was agreeing with another post about wanting someone to take the job and run with it, leaving no question as to who the starter should be and stopping the QB carousel (or revolving door, or whatever cliche works for you). It makes little difference to me if that guy is Lanning or Park or even Noland, just as long as one of them establishes himself as the guy under center week in and week out.

I'm sure all coaches including Campbell like one QB, but experience tells me he will use two and a wildcat guy if he believes it is best for the team based on 100's of hours of offseason. Just be ready to expect any form of combination of QB's until the day there is an obvious winner.

I think the QB position comes down to how well each player knows the offense and then most importantly who can throw the more efficiently (accuracy and touch).

If Park shows he can make the reads and throw better balls than Lanning, then Lanning will lose his job, BUT that is the only chance Park has of playing this year. He will have to really outperform him at practice by a lot - at least to start at the mid year point.

Does anybody think it's possible that he could use Lanning as a running quarterback more than what we're being led to believe? Thereby giving Park a chance to come in and spell him a lot more than what we're thinking.

I was curious to watch the Toledo/Arkansas game. Mostly offensively. Watch the 1 hr:40 min mark Simple Power play for the td run. Nothing complicated there.

Watch this game...

1:46 - This is RPO. Reading the OLB over #2 WR. OLB jumps the RB, QB pulls and throws. Poorly executed.
5:21 - Better execution of the same play. Defense is in a Cover 2 look so #1 runs off the cb.

Im going to continue to watch film and see what Toledo did that would fit ISU's offensive talent.

I'm guessing Lanning has first shot at getting the job done. I believe the plan will be to get Park a couple of series atleast each game. But, the game will dictate what actually is done. I also still believe you will see some 2 and 3 TE/HB sets. If opposition doesnt bring in big defense they will attempt to run it down the defenses throat. If they go big, Campbell will take the athletic big TE and split them out. I guess it depends on personnel, but I would hope ISU already had 2 athletic TE and 1 bad ass HB who can catch short passes. I saw this formation ran against Florida, Ohio State and other big schools. Can't believe Campbell and staff is scared to line up in this against the Big 12 if they like the matchups. This is based on 5 years of watching the offensive mentality of this staff.

Like all offensive coaches, they look for favorable match ups. I've seen a lot of 2x2 gun with offset rb, 3 wr sets with an h back pistol backfield, and 3 wr sets with 1 te. As far as what to call it? Multiple spread....I'm not sure. A very good coach once told me, just get the good player the ball. ISU has good skill players. Put the ball in their hands as much as possible.

What label would you slap on CMC's Toledo offense, spread? Power spread? Multiple? . . . Thanks.
