So i'm in the market now for a new receiver for the living room for surround sound. I only want 5.1 and i don't need a lot of extra junk. I'm looking in the $250-$300ish range. I've always really liked Yamaha, but i admit i've never owned any other brand except a sony about 16 year ago.

i was looking at this one
Yamaha RX-V471 Home theater receiver with 3D-ready HDMI switching at Crutchfield.com

any other recommendations?

thanks!

Yamaha, Onkyo, and Pioneer are all good bang for your buck receivers. I'd stay away from Sony. Newegg has a decent price on the ONKYO TX-NR509 and TX-NR609 right now.

I got a pioneer elite in the upper 3's a few years back. It was way better than the Denon I had, I hated that POS.

For that Yamaha, I would be concerned that there are only 4 HDMI inputs. I need 4, so I would want a few more for the next thing out there.

Looking at your needs, that would be a good receiver.

Assuming you never need multiple zones?

I've had Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, and HK. To tell you the truth there was very little difference. When I went up in price I just got more features. I've had the same Denon now for about 5 years and it's been flawless. The only one I probably wouldn't buy again is H/K. It's build quality didn't seem as good but it's working fine in my garage.

Right now it will only be used in the one room so I don't need it for any other zones. And as far as number of hdmi ports, right now I only need two, ever and ps3

I have the Denon AVR-4311 and love it. It has good power and 9 amps built in. All the features you would ever need but is not wireless.

You are on the right track. The only receiver I have ever had problems with is a Denon Surround Sound, 5.1. The center speaker does not operate. Denon has too many features.

Look at TEAC DR-H338I DVD/CD. It's a nice idea.

Yamaha probably has good prices on amazon.

I use wireless to stream music and movies from the web as well as music from a home computer. The AVR-4311 also has airplay which is a apple product that allows your touch, i-pod or i-pad to work as a remote for the system as well as play music from each of these devices. Works great and sounds great.

Where is the best place to buy. I hate to get something like this online because I want to hear it before I buy. I need a whole new system reciever and speakers.

I just bought a new Onkyo TXNR709, and love it.

Not to hyjack the thread, but does anyone know where I could get an old reciever worked on. I have an 19 year old Onkyo that quit working. Just wanted to see if it was something simple to fix, to put in the garage.

One thing to keep in mind is that depending on the type of speakers you have, the power requirements are going to change. For example, I have some speakers with a horn tweeter that are super efficient so you don't need as much power to drive them properly.

In a perfect world, you would bring each receiver home and listen to it while hooked up to your speakers. That is pretty difficult to do though.

I have the one you listed and it seems great. Stupid but cool feature: It comes with a microphone that you can set up once where you normally sit, and then it will fine tune the audio output to that location.

One note, the link says you need to buy the $90 ipod dock to use that, but the usb port on the front is set up to take the ipod from there. It then runs your ipod menu on screen, which is kind of annoying if you want to have the screen off, but good in other ways.

Another note, it was a little tall for my entertainment center, but you can remove the 'legs' and radio shack had little plastic nubs that would be stuck on the bottom, allowing the tall legs to be removed, and then the receiver could still breathe and not scratch up table.

Seems like you've already kind of made up your mind but I will just add I've always felt with Yamaha you got a good bang for your buck. I've never had a Yamaha receiver but I've had their speakers before and they were always outstanding and a great value. You will not go wrong with this receiver, I'm sure.

Another vote for Onkyo. They have another line called Integra (Integra:Onkyo as Lexus:Toyota, Acura:Honda, you get the idea). I used to have an Onkyo receiver and an Integra 6-disc carousel, and they sounded incredible. Polk Audio speakers. It was only rated at 55W/channel, but it got loud enough to shake pictures off the wall and make your ears hurt. It's not all about power.

I know JBL / HK have a nice site through e-bay where you can get referbed stuff that will have a new warantee on it when you buy it. I got a nice HK for $100 bucks w/ HDMI ports and works. Just not the most powerful model they produce.

For music only I think the old school stereo amps from the 60's 70's produce the best sound. I have a late 60's Yamaha amp that is hooked up to my turn table and my aiport express and I can only push it at about 20% because it starts to be just too loud.

Anyone know much about wireless subs for home theatre use?
