Any large hit to the head of a player is flagged and reviewed. The replay official will watch the replay and make the final call whether the defensive player targeted the head or not. If the replay official says it's tageting, a 15 yard penalty is assessed and the defender is ejected from the game. Not a huge football fan and I didn't get to see the football game today.
There was a targeting penalty drawn by West. What was the nature of the foul? I've at least looked up the rule and am wondering the exact action leading to the penalty.
It is unfortunate, I think there should be some way for the replay official to use his judgment of whether the defender was head hunting or not when determining the ejection. I think it's typically pretty clear if someone launches towards someones head or if he and the receiver both just happen to be going down as the hit happens.I absolutely agree it was a personal foul. I don't necessarily believe he deserved to be kicked out of the game.
Except he isn't launching himself at West's head if West doesn't see the contact coming and lower his head, there's basically nothing the defender could do there unless he just wants to not make the hit at all, which then can have it's own consequences if the receiver happens to break out of the first tackle. I think in both this situation and in Cotton-Moya's situation it's unfortunate they had to be ejected, I think just a 15 yard personal foul is more appropriate.I saw both the one on Cotton Moya and this one and the one on Iowa was clearly a targeting situation, where as Cotton-Moya was standing still and duck down to absorb the hit from the WR. The Iowa guy launched himself at West's head and led with his elbow. No excuse for it at all.

Did you hear the reaction at JTS two weeks ago?It ****** me off when the hoks booed the call, He clearly targeted West. Stay classy hok nation.
Because that's what defensive backs do.Not sure why he bothered hitting him at all, but correct call.
