How is it possible to have a scholly for Sledge? I'm not complaining here, but how can we actually work him in?

There are several potential factors that could affect the schollie numbers. Among them are White's iffy status for this season and next season or the questionable academic status of an incoming recruit or of a player on the current roster.

So I'm a little confused here...

While I'm very excited about Sledge, I want to know who might be getting the shaft. Did McGee "decommit?" Is someone else not going to qualify? Is another player on the roster transfering to Middle Tennessee State? Is the NCAA giving us a "sorry about Lucca" bonus scholarship? What the hell gives?

1. Your jokes are terrible.
2. Have you paid attention to college basketball at all recently? Lucca, LaRon, Justin, Chris, Charles...all of these guys were slated to be here on a scholly next year.
3. Your jokes are terrible.

This is correct.

The class is currently full scholarship-wise.

There is also the attrition factor to consider...Most programs lose a player or two who wants to play more at a lower level. We have no track record with Hoiberg but half of this first class was put together at the last minute...just something to think about.

Interesting point someone eluded to.If one of the guys was academically strong and could get an academic scholarship, could they walk on without the academic scholly counting against the athletic limit. Don't know if anyone would qualify but just wondering...

Not sure. I think this has come up before, and it seems like they closed that loophole, but I don't know for sure.

Word in the Twitterverse is that Tavon Sledge is committing this morning...no hint as to where, but I like our chances.

Paul Clark spoke with Tavon last night, and was told that he would not be committing anytime soon.

No, can't do it. I suppose the money could come from a different coffer but it still counts agaisnt the limit.

Here's how I look at this scholarship situation. If/When (I think he will) Sledge commits to Iowa State, yes, the program will technically be over the limit for 2011. But ever since I've been covering Iowa State basketball, which has been since 2003, I don't EVER remember a single season without attrition. It is part of the sport. Remember that Jamie Pollard email? Look at all of the transfers Iowa State has acquired. I basically see this as the Hoiberg regime being proactive.

I don't remember us oversigning before. Floyd probably did though. It just feels weird.

I'm sorry, but that is B.S. If I'm a student athlete with open scholarships from numerous schools with a current open scholarship to give, why make a commitment to a team on the poss. that one MIGHT become available.

Nope, I think something happened that we do not yet know. But if he's committed to ISU, than a scholarship is there waiting for him now.

Fizer's class had like 9 guys in it including a starting Left Tackle and I think that was the year CJ Bruton didn't get in. Of course it's possible we had enough open spots.

I never understand why people get worked up over scholarship numbers. It always works out in the end... no way all players are back next year, somebody always leaves.

If you're 19 year of age, and have a choice between West Virginia, UTEP, and other schools which currently has an open scholarship to give, and Iowa State, which might have one open at the end of the year. Do you choose Iowa State?
