legend has it that Jim Walden asked Bill McCartney if they should just play with a running clock during the blizzard game.

"We're really, really thin in our depth," Duquesne coach Jerry Schmitt said. "I was personally concerned because at our level, our backup guys are walk-on Division III-type players. To put some of them in to protect some of the skill guys... I appreciate Gary doing that."

Why not just stop the game and call it "final?"

Guessing TCU still wanted live game reps for some of the bench warmers.

Then, why give up any time on the clock? In other words, how did they decide that 12:00 quarters was the right solution?

Even if agreed by both parties, isn’t that considered a forfeit with all stats cancelled?

Yet, taking time off the clock (or playing a cupcake) doesn't skew the stats? Not sure I see a fundamental difference between a mercy rule that takes 3 minutes off per quarter and one that takes 15 minutes off per quarter.

Skews the stats, not eliminate. IF that’s what happens in that scenario where it’s a forfeit and it’s a 1-0 game for the score and stats don’t count, you potentially set yourself up for hurt in tie break scenarios and hurt the chances of your players winning awards.

Sounds like a good reason to not take any time off the clock.

Legends are born this way.
I think maybe the article I read was maybe referring to a different season, because I can't find it now. Coverage of Duquesne football is pretty sparse.
