Tennessee coach is unhinged

His qb just fumbled in the end zone resulting in a 100 yard Alabama TD. The Tennessee coach (who has been screaming like a mad man all game) grabbed the qb by the face mask and verbally undressed him. Pruitt has an anger management issue and needs to be suspended.

I wouldn't say he "grabbed" his face mask. He gave it a short little tug with his finger. Jimbo Fisher will grab a face mask. I remember Lou Holtz pulling a giant offensive lineman off of the field by the face mask one time too.

Wonder what the Tenn QB did besides make a really dumb play. Was he supposed to run a different play? Don't know. The coach sure was pissed though.

That's IT?

That's the tug on the facemask, but only a small portion of the yelling.

Obviously it's not terrible, and it's not the end of the world by any means, however, it just doesn't have to happen, and besides that, it's not effective either.

I feel like a head coach needs to be able show leadership and control themselves better than this. Everyone on here thinks Fran goes overboard, but yet because this is football or something... it's perfectly ok to be an idiot and lose control.

And yes, I believe the kid probably went rogue and called his own play there, which he never should have done, but it still isn't an excuse for the head coach to lose his mind.

This will be unpopular, but so be it. Things were different "back then," but the year today is 2019. That was uncalled for. If the coach was a player, that's a 15 yard penalty and none of you would even question it. You don't yank a player by his facemask. I don't care that he could have pulled even harder. It moved his head involuntarily, and that's enough for me.

A topic like this get way too much of the "when I played high school ball in the 80's" treatment

I had a coach straight up kick me in the nuts during practice.

Sure I didn't run to my parents or the school, but kicking, yanking, punching etc. players is weak ass leadership

Leave that B.S. in 1984

The face mask grab was only a small part of this. If you watched the game, you saw Pruitt screaming at his players, the refs, pretty much anyone the entire game. He seemed pretty out of control all night. The guy is ineffective, and will continue to be until he learns to control his temper.
You see it all the time...kids with parents who are screamers learn to ignore the yelling. So dad ratchets things up and gets physical. I played high school football for a coach who rarely raised his voice; when he did, we listened. He never grabbed a face mask or laid a hand on anybody. Never saw him get nuts with an official. We respected him for that and played hard for him.

I feel like your first paragraph about yelling describes a good portion of P5 coaches.

Respectfully, this has nothing to do with 1984 vs 2019... for me anyway. Had he yanked the facemask, I'd completely agree with you. This looked more like a "look at me so I know your listening" two-finger tug. Nothing egregious about it.

When I played HS football 35 years ago, the coaches believed it was a sign of weakness to take any water breaks during practice in the 90 degree heat, so we didn't get any until practice was over.

Thank goodness times have changed and that is no longer considered "macho" and "tough", but instead it's now considered "stupid" and "dangerous".

I'll go with Sage here. This is wannabe Lombardi B.S. Weak **** from the coach.

It's illegal to grab an opposing player's facemask because in the middle of a play, it can be extremely dangerous. I did not watch any of this game (or any part of any Tenn game this year) so I don't know about any other Pruitt antics, but this was not even close to dangerous or out of line. This was nothing.

There are different styles of coaching. Plenty of successful coaches yell at players and officials.

I have no issue with him screaming at him as he goes to the sideline saying.... "don't you EVER, EVER, think you can call your own play ever again or I'll kick your a** right off this team.... do you understand me???".

But you don't need to grab the facemask, and you don't have to completely embarrass the kid in front of his teammates and all the fans for several minutes non stop. Before the kid even reaches the sideline to get his a** chewing, he knows he screwed up BIG time, and that he's going to hear it. It's not like he gets much out of getting berated for minute after minute after minute.

In fact, as some have said, the coach will lose his players' respect at some point. Do you think the Iowa basketball players really respect Fran that much.... except for his sons of course.
