Wasn't a terrible call at all. It was terrible execution. Franklin was wide freaking open.

Go to 1:25 and see it for yourself. That's the game if that's just lobbed into the corner. He shot-putted it. CPR made a tremendous call and it should've worked.

CPR committed a travesty today. As bad as it is to say, it's true. Great job in preperation but he really stole this one from the players and the fans. The players played their hearts out, all game long. Good offense against the blackshirts! Good defense against a great offense, granted no TM but still.

Now... Where were AA, Arob, Jake, Money, Darius, Sims, LJ, Benton, AK, JK, and Lattimer when the game was decided?? Oh yeah they were standing on the sidelines watching all of their hard work p***** down the drain by allowing a BACKUP punter to decide the game.

Come on coach!! Let your playmakers decide this game. This was the last time we might EVER play NU and we COULD have won. Just a travesty. Let the players decide the freaking game. I feel so bad that the players are not able to celebrate their work today.

I agree completely. Lattimer would have totally completed that pass.

You can't give "crazy" much credit when he listed a bunch of defenders.

For someone that seems so sure the call was bad, he doesn't understand defense can't take the field on that play.

I do agree with this. why not let the players who got you there decide the game - as was his rationale to take it into OT. At the very least, have a backup QB throw the ball. That pass was horrible, and the player who executes that play should be an experienced backup QB, not the backup punter (who may very well have been a QB in hs, I have no idea, but i gather he's not a backup qb now).

He just got all excited because he made the starting defense. However, he had a letdown when he was told that the NCAA would be testing for 'roids.

What's to say that the players didn't convince the coach to run that play?

It was a great call. The play was there. Collin Franklin was wide open. Kuehl got a bit excited and shot putted it and with the strong wind, it allowed the Nebraska player time to recover and make the play. But NO WAY should Kuehl be blamed for this loss. There were PLENTY of other plays that cost us the game and it should have never gone to overtime. The Clones played tough today. I am sick that we lost. But, oh so proud, of our team. It was a great effort The guys need to put it behind them and take care of Colorado. It had to have been an absolutely great game to watch on national TV.

agreed, other than it appeared by the flags on the goalposts (straight down) that the wind was pretty nonexistent at that point of the game. i wasn't at the game, so i could be wrong.

You are not wrong. In the 4th quarter the wind progressively started to die down.

well, duders, if was such a great call why didn't it work? come on, if we are playing with gimmicks that is fine, but when you are even with nebraska all day--dont' pull gimmicks out at the most critiical moment.

This is one of the most pathetic posts I have read on here, and that is saying a lot. Sober off, get away from the computer and try to have some analytical thought.

I would hope the players aren't running the show.
I"m not saying running the show. I'm talking more about them feeling comfortable about the situation. ie: "Coach, I don't think we can score toe to toe with them any more. We should go for the win now; leave it all on the field with one play" type of thing.

thanks.

And i just watched the youtube clip above and as they lined up for the xtra point the flags on the goalposts are straight down (1:26 - you can just see the bottoms of the flags) just a bad throw - almost like he was trying to hard to put the touch on the ball v. just throwing it. he'll have nightmares of that play for years.

ok, then I will say i would hope the players wouldn't say that to the staff either. and they wouldn't. the o had just scored a TD on what, three plays? I bet the look on AA's face after the game was reflective of the loss AND the the way it was lost. IMO. as a player, in that situation, you want to have Nebraska beat you, not beat yourself.

One other thing that I didn't put in my first post in this thread...

The old coaching adage is that you play for the win on the road and the tie at home, which ISU did at the end of regulation. Then, Nebraska scores in 2 plays in OT to put the pressure on ISU. The Cyclones deposit one in the end zone and bring out the FG unit for the PAT.

Here's the part where the big stones come in...every once in a while, you take a calculated risk. You go against the percentages...you travel the road less traveled. I think Rhoads took that risk today, bucking the "that's what you're supposed to do" and decided to go for the kill shot.

Maybe it's a double standard, favoring the decision to play for the tie at the end of regulation and also loving the decision to go for a win in OT. But I still love the call.

I love the call too. But as all coaches know, when you hit the trick play you're a genius, but when you don't fans complain.

Just look at Mark Dantonio at MSU. He calls two gimmick plays at critical times against ND and Northwestern. Both work and Sparty was in the hunt for the BCS title game.

Les Miles called a ridiculous fake field goal against Florida and also hit on it for a huge win, which at the time kept LSU undefeated.

To have a great season, a coach has to take some chances.

The wind was definitely dying down. But there are still small gusts and swirling winds in JTS. I am not saying it was a big impact, but there might have been some effect. It happened on our side where we sit. Franklin broke free and was wide open. The call caught everyone off guard. For a moment I thought OMG we have got the win. and then I saw the wounded duck of a pass make a very, very high arc and was falling way short of its intended target.

They have been practicing this play ALL season according to Rhoads. The coaches felt they were ready to execute it. Everything looked good except the throw. But don't blame it on Kuehl. Far too many mistakes earlier put us in this position. He was doing his best. And I can think of many, many situations where his quick hands and holds have saved us.

Extra points aren't automatic either. Remember K-State from last year? Had we gone for the kick and missed, the same people would be ******** that we didn't go for the win when we had the chance. And remember that the kicker from Nebraska has not missed a FG since about forever.

I was calling for them to go for 2 the whole time, but the fake was a great call. Franklin was WIDE open in the corner. Just a bad throw.

Yep, no doubt about it. I just replayed that play in slow motion. Franklin was wide, wide open. It was just a bad throw. Great play call.
