What is happening to tailgating in America? - Rick Reilly - ESPN The Magazine - ESPN

Some of this stuff is just stupid and wrong...

Outside Soldier Field -- home of the Chicago Bears -- fans are getting kicked out of the parking lot once the game starts

the Cards have banned postgame tailgating, too. So waiting in lawn chairs by your car with your friends while the traffic clears is now forbidden. Get in line and waste gas like everybody else!

What they're doing at Central Michigan should be investigated by Congress. Tailgategate. The geniuses there banned external sound systems. Worse, CMU isn't letting any cars leave the parking lot until the third quarter. Reduces congestion, the school says.

How does keeping everyone in the lots cut down on congestion?

At Western Michigan, tailgating is permitted to begin no earlier than three hours before the game and must end at kickoff.

WTF?

At one ISU-KU game in Lawrence, there were signs posted that said no alcohol was to be consumed after kickoff.

They also had an actual white line painted on the grass halfway up a hill between the stadium and a parking lot. The line was supposed to be the limit of where alcohol could be consumed -- you can drink 2/3 of the way up the hill, but once you cross this line, that beer had better not come along.

Penn St. because of the snowstorm last weekend cancelled tailgating. Some of the things that some of the places are doing are to stupid its going tp tick more people off.

Seems to me, after looking at these reports from a variety of schools, that they just want everyone to go to the game rather than just party and leave when the game starts.

I hope ISU is smart enough not to pull something like this and start biting the hand that feeds. Can you imagine what ISU football game day would be like if we didn't have the tailgating that we do? (shudders)

Theres a reason we still allow reentry. Thank god. Some games its nice to go out and enjoy a beverage between halves. But taking it away would be hitting that benefit, and those who benefit most from reentry- those tailgating nearest the stadium- also generally pay the dept the most.

The fun police are at it again. Seems like they never rest.

Lots of people work hard on restricting fun. Glad that ISU still has great tailgaiting! The state of Iowa in general is a very free and fun place!

Its mostly a money thing though, id bet. Trying to get people into the game and buying tickets, and any food that is eaten outside the stadium is food the AD isnt making a ridiculous profit on.

I got my Master's from Central Michigan and remember (kind of) many a fun Saturday morning tailgating before football, and that was before the Chippewas became a good program!

What is happening up there and elsewhere is a complete joke

If ISU ever banned tailgating like some of these teams I would seriously not even go to most games. Maybe 1 per year. The rest I would sit at home and have friends over and tailgate in my garage and watch the game on a big screen. Tailgating in Ames is half the fun. Especially when you are 2-10.

If ISU ever ruined the great tailgating experience on gameday by enforcing such stupid rules, it would be the biggest mistake EVER.

Heck tailgating is the only reason I bought my 1982 Chevy Camper... put 8 Polk Audio speakers in it, 4 all weather on outside and 4 on inside, plus large I-State on both sides, and added ISU paint job... if the ISU big-wigs tried to come in and take away tailgating and all the great things that go with it they would be losing my season tickets purchase.

So many different/possible responses to that, but I'll digress. Doesn't ISU have some idiotic policy that doesn't allow people to cross the street with an open container - but as soon as you get to the other side it's fair game?

Last game I went to a game at Trice, I parked at Vet Med, and crossing Elwood (or University, whatever) everyone who had an open beer either pounded it or poured it out.

Yes, they do. But, I don't really care about it, all you need to do is just finish your beer before you cross the street. I'd rather have that rule than some of those others.
