The Athletic's bias

I hear everyone raving about The Athletic publication and how we all should subscribe, but at first glance the Athletic appears to be pretty biased. When you click on their College Football Heading, you get the screen below. It appears they must have writers dedicated to 7 Big 10 teams, including Iowa, but only 2 Big 12 teams (and neither of them will be in the Big 12 much longer).

It may be a great publication, but I think I'm gonna pass.

I believe Chris talked about this in the podcast with Brent. It really hits the nail on the head as to why we haven’t seen much bias skewed our direction from this publication.

With more ISU fans subscribing it is more likely that the publication will hire someone to cover ISU sports. You can filter which stories you receive. They still have coverage of ISU sports.

Yeah, I heard Chris and Brent talking nice things about The Athletic. However, just like the Cedar Rapids Gazette, The Athletic covers ISU with whomever they can find, but they have writers dedicated to Iowa. I'll save my money.

Yep. I love reading the Athletic.

Max Olson covers the Big 12 for the Athletic and has done a good job of covering Iowa State in my opinion. Bruce Feldman also does a really good job and has wrote a few good stories on Iowa State and Campbell recently. Stewart Mandel and Andy Staples have been the ones that continuously bash the Big 12 and are almost cheering for its demise.

This is fine. I hope ISU fans remember that folks with money will be watching these subscriptions and streaming services, and who and how many people are signing up.

If they had writers dedicated to Iowa State, as they do for 7 Big 10 teams, I'd subscribe. But I'm not going to start paying them money with the hope that one day they'll think Iowa State is important enough to justify a dedicated writer(s).

Honestly, the Athletic is better for their coverage of the pro sports. They always have one or two people assigned to each franchise beat. They are basically like the old school news paper sports writers, just without a word limit. I follow the Bears and Cubs, along with the Bills and Sabres for my GF, so it feels pretty worth while to me.

It does suck that ISU doesn't have a dedicated guy, but Scott Dochterman (Iowa beat writer) and Max Olson (national writer with a Big 12 focus) have both done fairly positive writing on ISU. The problem is that some of their national people that don't cover the Big 12 (Feldman, Mandel, Staples) do show a bias against the Remaining 8.

I do agree with the annoyance regarding the realignment coverage.

Certainly, agreed as well. I think Max has really picked it up and done a great job as well. Dochterman was a dud imo, he can write a decent peice here and there, but he's obviously an Iowa guy. Glad they added Max to the writers line up
