Hey Vikes, we are at 7 angry bandies right now. Just wanted to update the count.

I'm not angry, just cranky and looking for a fight because my kid is teething and wouldn't stay asleep last night.

That's right, it's the double whammy of CycloneFanatic's Worst People on Earth: A Band Nerd Who Talks About Having a Kid!

congrats bro? i cant tell if your bragging or mocking anyone that has never done anything with a musical instrument. Students that play in band generally have higher GPA and do get to go on a ton of school paid trips yada yada yada you could blabber about it for days. But what this thread is talking about is how the band should lay off on dumb crap they yell that is completely irrelevant to the game.

Not bragging or mocking at all, I just take issue with those who choose to use sweeping generalizations of others. I reiterate, there is a lot of anger and open hostility on this site. The acidic responses to the simplest questions is palpable.

im not genius but i think your math is a little off. 5+6 does not equal 15. and drumline doesnt even do basketball so if your playing the set then its basically a jam session for you.

Well we were talking about both marching band and basketball band so I was talking about marching band. When you add it the time before and after band to get to the field it adds up to 10 hours a week plus the 5 for drumline which is where I got the 15.

As far as pep band goes we practice once a week for an hour.

Well, now I know you're full of **** because I lived with 2 music majors in college and marching band is not a requirement for them. In fact both of them were actively discouraged from staying in band and caught a lot of **** from some of the more snobby professors in that department for sticking with it for all four years. Did you in fact go to UNI, where that actually is a requirement?

no im at iowa state. and i'm not full of ****. it must be a recent thing because i'm certain thats what she told me. because we marched right next to each other.

It may have been, but it has not been required for the last 3 years at least.

And I would cover the 4 years before that. So either he's lying or he got some bad information.

Either way, this is a minor point in what was already a dumb argument. The band's not going to change and if the dumb, harmless stuff they do is enough to ruin the game for you, you need to get the **** over yourself. Don't like the chants? Be loud, encourage the people around you to do the same, and drown them out. Don't like it that they're trying to get cowbell to catch on at the basketball game? Stop being so damn self-concious and go nuts during more than one song (Sandstorm) during the game, so the AD/arena people aren't looking for new ways to get you to participate. It's an easy fix, but unfortunately it requires a little more effort than writing a bitchy forum post.

i think i can use some generalizations considering i've been in each group. my buddies still give me crap for being a band kid and it doesn't faze me i generally laugh about it. you just gotta take things said on here with a grain of salt. i love music and loved band. in high school it was easily the highlight of my time there (we didnt do marching band but a ton of jazz band). i dont hate band kids at all because i am one but at some point you gotta have a line. the band really shouldn't try so hard honestly. just play their music and yell loud. it sounds alot better when 10000 people are doing OHH then 9950 doing ohh and 50 doing rubber chicken or w/e

If the band's not going to change, then I'm not going to change my cell phone use during the game.

If the 50 doing rubber chicken or w/e are even remotely challenging the 9950 doing ooh, then the 9950 have some serious issues. The hate should be directed towards them, not the 50...

Can you start the thread: "Students on Cell Phones"?

To be honest I have a flip phone and don't have internet so the only time I'm on my phone is when my mom or dad ask me the score.

We will need a new complaint thread for tonight's game. I think 1 thread per game should suffice. You guys come up with a topic, and I'll complain like no one has ever complained before.

ok i feel as a student who sits literally within arms reach of the band for the last 4 years it is my duty to weigh in.
side note: i was in band 4 years of HS and love music and still own my sax so I can see from both sides here...

Me and 3 friends have sat in the same spot for almost every home game as long as we have been at school. NEVER has the band bothered us by their chants or tomfoolery... most years it is actually something we laugh about after the games!

THIS YEAR IS SOOOOOOOOO SO SO SO different. Holy Sh**... it is literally one guy leading the charge in the tuba section and has somehow got the rest of the band to think it HILARIOUS to yell the most random thing on the planet!

On our drive to okoboji grill for postgame shenanigans my friends and I talked in length and decided that the band has no strategy except to think of the most random TOTALLY NON BASKETBALL related word... mash it together with the words HOOP or BALL and yell really loud and then all laugh hysterically if something happens to go wrong for whatever sister of the poor team we are playing...

It's NOT funny, it's VERY annoying and it needs to be toned the Hell down. I cant wait for conference season to start so then the students can out volume the band.

PS: I was on my phone last night quite a bit for fantasy football reasons and keeping up with other scores so get off mai back!!!

We usually have seats so high up at Hilton that other than music, I don't even notice the band. Maybe those annoyed could trade me tickets. We really enjoy sitting near the marching band somewhere on the north side, they seem to add a lot to the experience at JTS, although I thought that wedding halftime show was pretty lame. I thought our high school was alone in having our fabulous football team (two wins over the last three years) bully our marching band, but given the tone here, that may be the norm.
