I thought we were supposed to be receiving a laptop for my 3rd grader and a tablet for my kindergartner, but I haven't seen them yet
I hope your district has already purchased their technology. iPads are in very short supply right now. I doubt that they woud be able to buy them in bulk until at least October and maybe even later.

I struggle with DMPS contesting the states position.

By not having in person classes, they are saying the positive infection rate is significant in our community and spread cannot be controlled in a school environment. Even if they could feel they can create a safe environment in practice, these kids are still living in a highly contagious community (otherwise they would be in the classroom).

Now they want to compete/interact against kids who live in a community where the school board has deemed spread is not an issue. Seems very selfish of DMPS that they are willing to risk spreading Covid to another communities kids.

If HS kids were being tested 2-3x a week like college athletes, their position might be arguable.

Both kids ended up with laptops and we picked them up earlier this week. The laptops have the interactive/touch surface, so my Kindergartner can touch the screen to access most of the apps.

Headphones & web cams are also hard to acquire at the moment.

Surprising the laptop doesn't have a camera.

Don't most now?

Web cam was for me working from home - the built-in one on my laptop sucks. I also setup a TV in the garage and was hoping the kids could alternate doing school outside, especially the Kindergartner so he can have space to stretch/wiggle instead of sit in his chair all day.

Edit: I also work for a university that is attempting to procure technology for distance learning, and web cams/USB microphones have been in short-supply since May.

Ames is hosting Urbandale tonight with no fans. Ames is going 100% virtual to start the semester.

It's good to see fans aren't in attendance. But I don't think the Urbandale players have too much worry of catching Covid-19 from fans but from the Ames players.

I understand Ames & DMPS pushed back their start dates to get clarity on the situation, but seems to me they should just have cancelled this weeks contests to protect the other school's athletes.

my daughter plays varsity volleyball and my son runs jv cross country. I have spoken to numerous kids and their parents. They want their kids in school playing sports. However they agree that if the kids are online they do not play.

I just looked up numbers on DM East. Beds 1600 which means they are over 2000 in the high school and at least 7000 feeding into East K-12. It's an an unfortunate truth that a decent portion of those students live with a grandparent or high risk parents that are the results of poverty. Forcing those students into the classroom is quite possibly a death sentence for too many of their guardians.

Now let's look at sports. East has 43 players on the varsity roster according to quik stats. I agree playing football and attending class is not a good option. However, if those 43 kids are in a family structures that are able to deal with consequences why shouldn't they be allowed to play? All I'm reading hear is basically if my kid has to go to school to play why shouldn't they? I know it hasn't been actually stated but but it's oozing through the words.

Which can be turned around also with, if they are in a family structures that are able to deal with the consequences why shouldn't they be allowed to attend in-person class? It is the hot button issue.

My kids' school is in person and they are in sports, so it is basically irrelevant in my household. Along with my son being 3 classes in person and 2 online at ISU. The only issue he has is not being able to meet with his advisor to get signatures he needs for a minor and a couple other things.

I agree those 43 absolutely could be in class. It's the percentage of the 7000 that can't that DMPS made the decision for.

Is the appraised value of your home less than $100,000.00? Yes, it makes a huge difference.

Not sure what the bolded is getting at, but I would say over half the houses (probably 2/3rds) in the town I live are under 100k

Check out the $25 Wyze security cam. They have a driver you can flash onto the cam to turn it into a web cam. You also need a specific USB cable. It has worked for us all summer and into the school year.

My biggest issue at least with Des Moines is they have shown zero effort to try some form of hybrid learning. They’ve seemingly taken this political stance to fight the governor. They have ignored their students and families needs.
They are trying to keep people safe, but I will say they have been completely defensive and non negotiable.

Ok, so you're rural enough that 100k can still get a decent house.

My point is you aren't in an area of poverty. Likely your community and your opponents have low Covid risk or at least less than putting 2000 students in one building.
