SIAP. The best maidrites in Iowa are only available at Taylor’s Maidrite in Marshalltown. IIRC, the meat is a blend of beef trim, beef cheek meat, and beef hearts. Until a few years ago, they didn’t even have ketchup as an option. If you’re ever in M-Town, my advice is two stop in and ask for “ Two with mustard, pickles, and onions.” You’re welcome.

Also, get a piece of peach pie and a chocolate malt. Ask for the malt in to go or you’ll be there forever.

I understand the difference, grew up on Maid-Rites and still love to get one when I can.
I wanna know tho- why Sloppy ‘Joe’…? Why not Sloppy Steve or Sloppy Kevin? Plus, how sloppy was this guy? Did he leave a mess every time he came in, maybe he always came around disheveled and what not? How miserable of a guy was he that they’re sitting around one day and said, ‘you know who this sandwich reminds me of…’. These are the questions that keep me up at night. So I did a little search and here’s what I found:

We called them sloppy ho's.

BTW, Chris Hassel is born and raised in Muskieville,.....he has a special master level of knowledge in this discussion.

"Maidrite" is a brand. There is still a Maidrite in Cedar Rapids in the 600 block of 1st Ave SW. Unfortunately the one in Marion closed several years ago.

As others have said, the hamburger in a Maidrite is ground extremely fine - much finer than normal hamburger. And while it, I believe, is marinated in some spices, there are no other sauces - especially no sloppy joe sauce - with a Maidrite.

Maidrites, sloppy joes, and taverns are all the same thing with the line exception being inside the wall of a branded Maid Rite location.

Also, using Manwich is reprehensible.
