Looking for a inside "Source" so I can start reporting to different forums. Anyone that is interested, make up your resume or whatever. Needs to be believable, so no hawk fans.

Probably because they refuse to leave Duke which is an absolute joke in football. Honestly, Duke and UNC could join up with Syracuse, UCONN, Pitt, BC, etc and form a fine basketball conference that would still probably give them a bump in revenue over what they are getting now.

UNC's got way too much pull to be considered a "basketball only" school. They've got a well-rounded athletic department that's had success in just about every sport. Given the choice, I think they'd drop their buddy Dook in a heartbeat if it was all that stood in their way. The only relevancy this rivalry has is in basketball where it would be pretty easy to maintain if they were in different conferences.

This would make for a fantastic Diplomacy-like game. Who could make the biggest foot print wins. Start with big 8 or PAC 10 or something similar. I would play.

Can't say I'm surprised at my bosses' bosses' bosses balking at major $ increase for SEC. Mizzou/A&M don't do much for broadcast network.

lol.

I don't see how UNC gets ignored by the super conferences and is forced into merging with the Big East.

I think the only teams on the Big 10's radar are UNC, Duke, Virginia, Maryland, Rutgers, and some have mentioned Georgia Tech. I don't know if they'll take any of those schools, but UNC is definitely the most valuable.

But if you're UNC, and you have a BB conference that suddenly loses someone like Clemson and FSU, who are more often than not in the bottom half of the conference, and you pick up BB superpowers like Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville, and UConn, I think you could see UNC turning down the Big10 to stay in the #1 BB conference. Even though the money will be less, BB is what they value.

I don't think it will be a matter of the ACC getting "merged" with the Big East. It will be more like the remaining football schools in the Big East being added by the ACC, at least the worthwhile football schools - Louisville, UCONN, Rutgers, etc.

I'm a grad student at NC State right now. My guess is that the politicians in North Carolina might try to force NCSU and the Tar Holes to remain in the same conference. I know many NC State fans that would love to be in the SEC, or at least get rid of the ACC comish (a UNC alumnus). On the other hand, I know many ACC fans that aren't even worried about the ACC's current vulnerable status (heads in sand maybe?).

I think if the ACC is in a downward spiral, the NCSU brass will jump off the ACC ship.

Their "buddy Dook" has a multi-billion dollar research partnership with UNC. Think that might sway them?

The last "4 super conference" scenario included Duke, Wake Forest, UConn, Maryland, UNC and UVA but kicked out Kansas State.

What we're seeing here is a natural and rational market correction. If it's all about football you don't leave out teams that have been national players in favor of small private basketball schools like Wake Forest.

I can't believe Miami ends up in the ACC/Big East if the other 4 truly explode. That would be even more ridiculous than KSU being left out, but in this new development we're seeing basketball schools on the outside more than before.

Back in like 2007 or 2008 the SEC got an eye popping $17 mil/team/yr. I thought the reason the money was so much was that ESPN was paying extra for them NOT to create a SEC network. I can only assume that if ESPN holds the rights to most SEC games (except CBS tier 1) that ESPN will be the major content distributor for a SEC network.

UNC and Duke will never be in separate conferences... ever.

Wake Forrest, on the other hand, would be dropped by the rest of the North Carolina schools in a heart beat.

I agree. I could also see the ACC adding Villanova, Georgetown, or a couple only BB only schools too. It would be a ridiculous BB conference.

But yes, as we've seen the last couple years, full blown mergers don't happen. The stronger conference cherry picks as many teams as they want to and leave the rest to fend for themselves.

I don't see the ACC ever adding ANY BBall-only schools. They're smart enough to remember what happened to the Big East. After all, they're the ones who did most of the Big East raiding.

I sincerely doubt that such a research partnership hinges upon which athletic conference the members schools are in.

Actually, maybe CBS should cut the SEC money...

And completely ignore the history of the Big East? They'd have to be totally ****ed in the head to turn down the Big Ten for what would essentially be a brand new, untested "basketball-first" league.

And they're much, much more than just a basketball school. They have one of the top athletic departments in the nation, and I see absolutely no way they jeopardize that by spurning a super conference for the type of league described above.

Most of what I've read from UNC fans is that they would look first at SEC. SEC would probably take them.

Its interesting when you look at the big picture. Is there enough value in any one of the teams outside of the Big XII, Big Ten, PAC, or SEC? For example, how much more does each school in the SEC get by adding UNC?

I understand your logic, but I'm just saying I could see it happening. I don't think UNC and the ACC fully understand what is happening if all the rumors are true. If they did understand it, they'd do everything they could to keep FSU from leaving. Once the anchor schools are gone, the thing will eventually blow up.

But it won't blow up immediately...and I think if BB is the real priority at UNC, then why run off to the Big 10 and leave BB superiority and the familiarity of the ACC? Now several years down the line, once they understand that the ACC has been left behind, I think they'll wise up and leave for the Big 10. But in the near future, I could easily see them saying no. Maybe I'm crazy though.

I agree; UNC in the SEC seems like the most mutually beneficial arrangement. UNC would be a huge get for either the Big 12, Big Ten, or the SEC. They are the premier program in a populous state that's totally untapped by everyone besides the ACC. To think of them ending up in the Big East is nonsense.
