I guess I struggle to say Monte, Matt or Naz really "developed" under Prohm. They were good when he got here and good when they left. But to each their own.

They went from like 9/10 to 12/10.

They found another gear or two as juniors and seniors.

Thomas and Nader were much better under Prohm, too.

I mean Georges Niang was good when he got here but he certainly got better over the course of his career. Matt Naz and Monte had their best years as seniors in the program.

A couple of things here. First of all Prohm literally got one of the best transfers in the country in Shayok two years ago and Bolton was listed as one of the best transfers available this past year. Sure some of them haven't worked out, but not all do. Secondly, Prohm probably preaches early playing time, but that's not always the case. Prohm doesn't just play you because you were a highly rated recruit in high school and he promised you playing time (Terrence Lewis falls into this category). Prohm also was very transparent to Xavier Foster that it's not a guarantee he'll be starting. He's a McDonald's All-American.

The second bolded item is also ridiculous. We don't develop players? We literally had 2 guys get drafted last year and have a lottery pick on the team this year.. You don't think Halliburton has developed since he got on campus? Also, expecting guys to develop a ton from their freshman to their sophomore year is a bit over the top. Guys sometimes need more time to develop into the player they're going to be.

Why is football being brought into this conversation? Are you actually criticizing Matt Campbell in developing players? Hakeem Butler and David Montgomery were low in the rankings and turned out to be some of the best players at their position in all of college football. Brock Purdy is being talked about being a 1st round draft pick. Kolar is one of the best tight ends in the nation. That's not development???

Finally, we obviously are struggling on defense and it's been that way ever since Fred became the coach. If you're a team that scores a ton of points, you're going to end up giving up more points. It happens. But I'm also not going to criticize us for making a last second 3 to win a game.. I highly doubt you were criticizing our defense when Naz hit those threes against Oklahoma State, D-Jack hit the three in Allen Fieldhouse, or when Shayok hit that three against K-State last year in the Big 12 Tournament.

I don't think Bolton was in the top 25 of transfers according to Jeff Goodman if I remember correctly. He is a good transfer but I don't think he was considered one of the best.

I do not know if there is a way to sort for this, but I doubt there are many (or even any) immediately-eligible transfers being more productive than him right now, particularly ones who are going to have two more years after this one.

Bolton has essentially replaced Wigginton in the lineup -- if not improved on him slightly. He is not the problem. Basically everybody else (save TH) and the lack of a "big wing" type, which Horton-Tucker would have been, is the issue.

Without Bolton, then yeah, we might very well be heading for #10 in the Big 12.

I thought he was listed as one of the better transfers but I could be wrong. Either way I think he's ended up being a good get and will only continue to get better.

Well the list of immediately eligible transfers with two years remaining after this year would most certainly be pretty small so you are probably right on that one. But that wasn't the point. I was just saying that he wasn't considered an elite transfer recruit at least by Jeff Goodman, for whatever that is worth.

You have to give Prohm some, or a lot, of credit for finding him, securing him, and getting him eligible. If this thing is going to turn around somehow, then Bolton is probably going to be the centerpiece of a comeback, if there is a path to one at all.

He needs to make a staff change to correct this...yesterday...last year...two years ago...
I mean we did just pick up one of the best centers in the nation, so that may help things. But I'll agree as far as other bigs have gone, the development and recruitment has not been very good at the 5 position.

Coaching defense is a mindset. Playing defense in basketball requires concentration, anticipation, and quickness. If you watch the best defensive teams in the country, you will notice they react immediately to the offensive player's move, and stay with him every step of the way.

On offense, you're basically one step ahead of the defender, because you know what you're going to do. Coaching players to play effective defense, especially players who are used to being the best player on the floor regardless of the opponent, can be difficult if not impossible.

Prohm talks a lot about being a tough-minded defensive team. I haven't seen that so far, which makes me wonder how effective he is at teaching it. Kids know how to shoot and score, that part is fun. Defense isn't glamorous, but it wins games, doesn't require a home court, and is portable.

Mindset/concentration are a part of it. But scheme is just as important on defense as it is to coaching offense.

It's clear we don't have a coherent scheme on defense. Even listening to Coach Prohm's post game interviews he talks in circles about scheme "well we tried ICE, and then we tried under, we hedged some, we just gotta get tougher".

We just gotta get tougher really isn't an answer for anything in basketball. Tougher is an impossible to define metric. Bob Huggins teams are "tough" because the have great defensive schemes and are well coached on individual defensive techniques.

There are very very few coaches that are good at coaching both offense and defense. Prohm clearly isn't a defensive coach. That can be ok, but if that is the case he needs someone on his staff that is.

Thoughts from one of ISU’s biggest boosters

"Two games back from the top half of the league" sounds like a great motto for Iowa State basketball. Put it on the posters next year.

We are also one game out of the bottom of the league.

You could realistically be like 6-12 and be in the top half of the league.

2 games back is quite delusional for anyone who's seen this team.

I think too many people are latching on to the last little bit of this tweet and ignoring the important parts at the beginning of it.

Realizing full well how anti-Prohm this sounds were they developed, or was it just the natural progression of a player through their junior and senior years?

Do you remember the change in Matt Thomas' defense? He went from a defensive liability to a player who wanted to defend the best guard.

I think coaches are given too much credit sometimes for development. A lot of it comes down to the player and the work they are willing to put in. Coaches can help give them the tools and teach them what they need to do to improve but a lot is just about self motivation.

Does that mean we can delete all of the posts in this thread that bash Prohm for not developing players?

True, but based on the last 5 years I struggle to believe Prohm turned Matt into a good defender. If so, give the rest of the team some of what Matt was having.

It's also about the coaches putting them into a system that can highlight their talent. Shayok got drafted because he came to a system like Iowa State. He was not going to get drafted at Virginia.

No real way to tell, to be fair, and ample opportunity to read your preexisting biases into it. Guys who got good "worked hard on their game themselves" while guys who did not develop "did not receive good coaching or instruction from the staff." You could switch that around very easily. Which one is the truth is hard to say at any point.

I agree bashing kids is going to solve nothing. But majority of bashing I’m seeing is on Prohm. He’s the adult that makes 2.3million. He’s deserving of criticism. As i type that out tho i guess that solves nothing either but hey this is a message board. If answers to questions were easily solved this would be a pretty dead place.

I think Prohm really is a great recruiter, it's his #1 strength, and I think he is probably one of the best in the country. He would make a fantastic top-level assistant in ANY program.

OMG he is Wayne Morgan.
