Obviously people are gonna disagree, but I spent 8 years in Ames while attending college and graduate school, and now 4 years thus far in Iowa City working as a young professional. I will admit that I have not been back to Ames as much recently as I would like, so most of my points about Ames will be dated by about 5 years. However, the things I like about Iowa City:
- Progressive, very liberal. I'm
as left leaning at they come, so this appeals to me. Ames always struck me as more conservative (and that's fine, no need for political arguments), but that's not my thing.
-
New Pioneer Food Coop. I like places like this, only had Hyvee in Ames.
- Beer. You like
craft beers? You like breweries? You like gastropubs? Iowa City over Ames in my opinion. Pubs I love: Sanctuary, Moonrakers, 30 Hop (60 taps, rotating drafts, newly opened in Coralville), John's Grocery (not a pub but huge beer selection), Backpocket Brewery in Coralville, Big Grove Brewery in Solon, etc. I will admit I miss Old Main, and that place singularly saves Ames from being blown out in this aspect.
- Food: I'm a bit of a foodie, and the nice restaurants in Iowa City are better than anything I had in Ames. I used to like the Cafe a lot while I was in school, but the choices in Iowa City is far beyond Ames (Linn Street, 126, Devotay, Clinton Street Social Club, Vesta, Basta, etc)
- Outdoor stuff:
Heavier bicycling culture in Iowa City, more parks, more hiking trails, Lake McBride, close to the Dubuque area, Sundown / Wisconsin for skiing and snowboarding.
- Music: Local venues, more local acts, more smaller club shows. The Maintenance Shop used to be good ****, but again, Iowa City has been better for me to find acts I want to see.
If all you do in Iowa City is go to the Ped Mall and Brother's then yea, you're gonna have a bad time. Once you take out the University and all the obnoxious students the town itself is actually pretty great. I love Iowa State and will be a Cyclone until I die, but I honestly cannot think of one thing that Ames has, speaking for the town itself, that I miss or that Iowa City doesn't have. Maybe Battle's BBQ.
Different strokes for different folks though.
