It's probably low because TJ and Jamie both know he isn't interested in going anywhere and they have discussed that.
It’s low because TJ wants to be able to compete. If we do not have the $ to be competitive, he could consider leaving. I think he will stay if he can reasonably compete in the open market for players.

If that was the case they would keep it high.
Way too much uncertainty in the landscape for TJ to agree to something that becomes a roadblock to going elsewhere if the Big 12 or ISU can’t remain competitive or if Pollard leaves and we get another Vandevelde

Reduces liability for the employer also.
Doesn’t the contract state we’re on the hook for 100% of what’s remaining on the deal if we terminate?

If so, tough to see the liability decreasing for the AD

Imo the low buyout just represents that TJ staying is contingent on the program being supported well enough to keep up with other programs

Yeah, I always thought the buyout to fire a coach was the remaining value on the contract. And that the buyout we always reference was only the amount of the coach chose to leave. But the way this is being explained maybe I was wrong.

Not necessarily. For example, Devries's buyout is 67% of the remaining contract if he gets fired. 37% if he chooses to take another job.

A lower buyout for the school to fire you often makes them feel more comfortable offering you a higher base salary than they might otherwise. It's all part of the negotiation for both sides.

Usually coaches are going to seek to be paid as much as possible, have the freedom to leave if something better comes along, AND have as much financial security as possible in the event they are fired.

The school is generally trying to satisfy those 3 areas as conservatively as possible. Usually there's some give and take between those areas, unless you're dealing with a hall-of fame coach or an idiot athletic director (i.e. Gary Barta)

Does this happen to other schools as often as it seemingly does to us? Rumors of another job. Get a raise. Rinse and repeat. I wish I was in that much demand :)

Yeah, that’s all basic stuff

The point was TJ is owed 100% if we fire him. It’s fully guaranteed.

So lowering his buyout if he leaves seemingly has little (nothing) to do with reducing the university’s liability so we can better fund players

The lower buyout hopefully motivates us to better support the program, but I doubt it’s simply a ruse
