Holloway came as a scholarship player and beat out Jason Kimbrough for the pg duties.

yeah you're right I got the two confused (the daily thing). But I thought the Rocket was a baseball player that walked on to the basketball team.

It could be the other way around, but for some reason I thought he was a walk on in basketball.

Edit: I could be wrong though

Hey, I got one right. I'm happy.

Wegner has to up there among the best walk-ons.

That guy from the WWII era should be there, too. I forgot his name, though.

Not sure about Thompson and baseball, though. Anyone?

I know he was an All-American baseball player, I just can't remember if he walked on to the basketball or baseball team.

He was Iowa State's first two sport All-American.

Back on track, Waldo Wegner should be in the conversation.

I'm reading every article I can on Gary Thompson right now, and they don't mention him walking on in either sport. They do mention him as our 1st first-team All-American, and the baseball teams regular shortstop for all three years.

This is interesting and fun. Thanks for getting that ball rolling.

From '88 to '92, ISU had Brian Pearson from Palmer, Iowa. He was my favorite player when I was growing up--I was in elementary school when he played here. He was a great 3-point shooter, a great guy, and will always be one of my favorites.

idk how he could be considered the best, or one of the best. I mean, I like the guy, but he only averaged 6 pts and 3 ast per game in his career, and on losing teams

Paul Shirley was a walkon and played in the NBA like Hornacek.

well, sort of. he already had a full ride academic scholly to my understanding so there was no point in giving him another full ride. just good luck that it freed up one for another player. i believe they ended up his senior year giving him an athletic scholarship mostly as a sign of appreciation of his talent and we had one to give...maybe I am wrong on some of this but not the first part.

I think they had to give Shirley a athletic scholarship at some point or at least count him as an athletic scholarship because he played so much. Some kind of rule to prevent schools from stockpiling lots of players on full-ride "academic" schollies.

Hornacek might be the best walkon of all time, any school. He's in a league of his own.

Among the rest of the walkon world, petey is good.
