I'd be interested in how much of the scheming/play calling is actually done by Meyer before I anoint him as anything. 5 star talent, plus a head coach who has had very good offenses everywhere he has coached...I'm not so sure you can put a ton of the success on Herman.

I for one can't wait to see him get a head job. I think there's a damn good chance he falls on his face but honestly I just think it will be entertaining to see if he's good or bad...I really can't tell.

Watched the Cyclone.tv highlights of a season with Seneca Wallace. He would certainly help make an offensive coordinator look good!

In my lifetime the only 'adequate' ISU offensive teams had an NFL QB, Sage or Seneca.

Would have liked to seen Messingham/Herman at ISU with an NFL QB.

Herman did have a 3 game stretch of averaging 500+ yards with these skill guys: QB Jared Barnett, RB James White/Jeff Woody/Duck Hollis, WR Albert Gary, Aaron Horne, Chris Young, Jarvis West (Reynolds/Lenz each got hurt during that stretch and missed time.) I would have loved to see what Herman could do with the current group of skills guys. That said, I'm more excited to see what Mangino and crew can do.

I think Herman is good from Sunday to Friday as far as schemes go but at ISU he really struggled on game days. He seemed to have one strategy each game and if that didn't work, he struggled to adjust. Time after time under him, the offense would seemingly run the same 4 or 5 plays that weren't working in the first place. I think that sort of lends itself to the notion he'd be better as a head coach with a good game day guy as his OC.

Herman calls plays but Meyer has veto power.

I personally believe we win 8 games in 2012 if Herman stays. I'd still much rather have Mangino, but I think Herman was better than a lot of people give him credit for.

CPR probably didn't let Herman coach enough, but I think he let him coach more than some people like to think. Shot, we threw the ball like 60 times when we beat Okie State and that wasn't in CPR's game plan.

Even if CPR would have let him coach more, idk if that would have kept him in Ames.

I always appreciate when people come right out and admit that they're idiots.

The heck with you guys who want to blame Rhoads. We haven't had a good offensive line since Seneca's junior year. How is that CPR's fault? Herman sure as heck didn't have one to work with, the quarterbacks were iffy, and the receivers not so good. Can't do a whole lot if you don't have passable talent--as the team is starting to get to having now. Stop taking shots at CPR.

Calling a play for Ohio State means calling anything and then taking credit for whatever Braxton Miller does, even when it is clearly a broken play which is often.

It's going to be really interesting to see how this year plays out. Way different than the Rhoads regime's normal operations up to this point, particularly on offense.

We almost have two head coaches this season, from the sound of it--one O, one D/special teams.

Great point. Thats as bad of a skilled set as you can find in the Big 12 (minus KU)

I'm also intrigued by the idea that CPR "got in Hermans way". As if the two didn't have extensive conversations about how the offense would be run, type of play calling and what not. CPR knows football, he's a hell of a defensive mind, he know's what his offense should do. He wouldn't have hire, nor would Herman have accepted, a position at ISU if the two didn't have similiar thinking towards offensive scheme and play calling.

IMO, Herman's issue at ISU was his inability or unwillingness to utilize the skillset his players had. The offense dropped 5 pts/game in his first year even though there were a number of returning players with playing experience. There was little improvement over the next two years. You could also tell from his interviews that he really wasn't interested in making any changes to his system to take advantage of the skill set of his players. That won't work at ISU, and it's completely opposite of what Mangino says in his interviews.

If he slides into a HC job where players are in place that fit his game philosophies, he could be very successful. Or maybe he's learned about adapting, although it's difficult to see how he would learn that at tOSU.
