If Herman had this years version of Richardson, the view of him would be greatly different. According to your logic and others proclaiming this is Meyers system, then Bowling Green and Utah were powerhouses when Meyer there which is something I was unaware of. I believe Herman is a great coordinator. I don't know what he'll be like as a head coach. Coordinators don't always translate. Just knowing football is a long way from what being a head coach is.

You are not aware of the success Meyer had at Utah and BGSU?

That's debatable. A great head coach head coach hires coordinators like Guz Malzahn and recruits players like Cam Newton. He does have a national championship. And if anyone can win at places like Auburn why was it their first title in decades?

Debatable that Chizik was a great head coach? The guy got fired 2 years after winning a national title. And still doesn't have a job. That's all that needs to be said about his "greatness".

Everyone here seems to mention TH can't win without 5* talent, but his offense did put up crazy numbers at Rice, even against decent teams (with talent on par / better than his own). Alternatively, we lose to d2 programs while not showing any offensive life with every coordinator we've had under this HC.

I don't disagree, I just wish he'd have went to another Big 12 school, so we could compare apples to apples in this scenario. It just seems to me the Big 10 is built more on a power game over all, more than speed. It was pretty obvious that Ohio State was able to do whatever they wanted against Big 10 defenses this year. Obviously, it takes a decent coach to do what they did this year, but I wonder what that would have looked like against defenses built around stopping that style offense week in and week out.

That being said, there has been one consistent thing with this team the last six seasons and that is Rhoads. So, as happy as I was at the time that Herman left, I'll end up not blaming him since it seems he's got things working well now. I'm not sure I would want him back though. Whomever the problem really was, what he did here at ISU didn't work very well, maybe it wasn't all his fault, but I didn't see anything from the ISU+Herman combination that would give me any confidence in bringing him back.

In my opinion, staying the OC at a school like Ohio State and having some success will produce better options than being HC at Iowa State where there seemingly is always a talent margin...but what do I know, I'm only a genius in Mensa.

Really late to the party so SIAP but TH leaving didn't do any harm to ISU, imo...hiring Messingham did.

My post history indicates that I'm as sick of the excuse machine as anyone but I still think hiring a guy with experience as an OC in this league was a good move. Mangino deserves the benefit of the doubt for the 2014 season.

I don't pine for the zone read in any way shape or form. He is on his third QB this year, and I don't think that is a coincidence. That offense is effective, but is punishing on a QB. You need a big, fast elite level athlete that can throw and run, and you need more than one. At the power 5 level the hits are much harder, and the defensive players faster. It is a rare athlete that can run it, and ISU will never have a deep bench of QB's like Ohio State.

What's been the one constant with the Herman/Messingham/Mangino offensive struggles? The head coach, that's been the issue the entire time.

Herman not his 3rd QB this year because of the zone read. Both Braxton and Barrett were both injured inside the pocket on pass plays. Miller's was during non-contact drills and Barrett had his knee buckled in the pocket. Even Sam's injury this year was not from running a zone read but on a pass play. Yes, the QB has to be durable in the zone read scheme, but most of those QB injuries do not come from actually running that play because they can see where the hit is coming from.

Lol...yea actually they were. Herman was awful here, he was so arrogant about running his offense and being the smartest guy in the room that he woudn't adjust to his personnel. We are still in the wake of the offense he tried to install here. People around here love to bash the Chizik years for his bad coordinator hires but the offense put up better numbers then than Hermans year.

Herman did a great job this year but it must be nice when your 3rd string QB was the 30th best QB prospect (or whatever he was) in his class.

Entirely possible. My point though, with regard to the OP is that TH leaving didn't create some giant hole. We could've been okay if we'd hired a professional OC. We didn't. It's less about TH leaving and more about who took his spot. An error by PR, no doubt.

Talent at the QB position has NOT been constant in the least. There's a big difference between Barnett/Jantz and Sam Richardson.
Messingham had more to work with than Herman, he was just terrible at his job.

Tulsa and Houston are geographically in the Big 12 foot print. Tough to lose Montgomery and Herman to two programs who recruit the exact same players a lower level Big 12 school like ISU would. And if they take those jobs it means they could be had.

Here's how this is gonna work. He's gonna spend 1 year in Houston. If Rhoads doesn't work out. He's coming here. That's exactly what malzahn did... Who knows...
