Based on what we know on this date, what are expectations for next year ISU wrestling team? Top 10? Top 5?
Of course assuming all goes well and we avoid injury bugs.

Top 20.

Sure fire AA and very likely finalist/champ, and then a ton of questions.

Im wait and see on Degen, Parker, and Colbray. Potential is there for a top 10, but not getting my hopes up again like I did this year.

I was thinking around 8 if Gremmel came back. That has be backing off a couple spots now. 10/11 area is what I think now.

Not supposed to say this but I really hope Degen can come back and be at full strength and realize his potential for you guys next year. Tough, tough wrestler and seems like a solid kid.
He’s a good kid, I just want him to be healthy. Was concerned when he said he was coming back, don’t want him to injure himself anymore. I am happy and cautious at the same time.

I look at AA numbers to get a good guess of what to expect. This year's results were as follows:

1618415429289.png

So, roughly, a Top 15 finish requires 2 or 3 AAs.

A Top 10 needs 3 or 4 AAs.

Top 5 is probably 5 or more AAs.

Carr should be a hammer again next year, so the question is who else can AA for us next season?

Redding? I doubt it, but he should score points next year.
Degen? He's done it before but I think there's a lot of health questions with him.
Parker? He's definitely capable, but he hasn't shown he can do it yet.
Colbray? Can he? Yes. Will he? I wouldn't bet money on him.
Coleman? He took great strides in this abbreviated season, but his AA potential is still questionable (my opinion).

Who's left?

Unless things change (transfers, etc.) I can see us anywhere from a 20th to 5th finish next year.

Degen is resting his body & going to get into wrestling shape this summer. When he's in shape, his gas tank is full all 7 mins (how many matches that were stopped due to an "injury" of the other wrestler so they could get their breath back & that hurt Jarrett - Max/Lugo). He says his shoulder good just has to keep getting it stronger. Knee should be healing up nicely. He knows what he is capable of & how hard he has to work to get back to AA. Love hearing the support for him.

What does Parker, Degen, Colbray & Coleman have common. They were all injured heading into Nationals or lost significant mat time due to early season injury. Chances of that happening again are very small. I definitely would expect this team to be closer to 5 than 20. If it isn’t then there better be sone turnover on the staff.

This is good to hear. We all know when he’s fully healthy he’s a threat to beat anyone in the country. Really hope we get to watch him next year.

another way to look at it is that Parker, Coleman, and Colbray did what they’ve done their entire careers - injury or not.

Yes, I think so too. I'm biased.

Ian was hurt during Big 12's, if it wasn't for the knee injury he could of medaled at NCAA's. Weight change the one year screwed them both, I think. Then last year being hurt. I'm going to say they both are going to be stronger than ever next season. Sammy isn't coming back just to be a qualifier again. I'm hoping for the best for all of them!

You really like being a d*** don’t you. I hope it make you sleep better at night. Trashing 3 guys that had their NCAA opportunity taken away last year followed up with injuries this season. That’s what I would based my expectations for next year on...wow you are special.

Stating the truth does not equal trashing. Sorry I hurt your feelings.

But you know there is nuance to each of their individual situations. So while the results are the results, ignoring circumstance to make a point and be negative is ****-ish.

I think you're aware of that and it's the role you like to play here.

Many sides to "truth" based on perspective. Sure, I have had a lot of moments of disappointment with results and situations for about as long as I can recall being an ISU alumni and fan for the past 3 decades, but there have been a lot of great moments as well. I certainly had higher hopes coming into this season, but things didn't work out in many ways and others it was great. I am choosing to look forward and support the coaches and team. Constantly pointing out the negatives in every situation gets tiresome, but it's your prerogative.

I hope those guys perform well and all of them get on the podium this year. Just not counting on it given the 5 years of experience they’ve already had in the program as evidence.

What talent is returning for the schools which shut down wrestling due to COVID? Ivy League etc? Cornell is usually well represented.

Cornell will contend for a team trophy next season with returning hammers Darmstadt (197), Vito (125/133), and Yianni (141/149). Then, they have young guys that are speculative AA contenders like Yianni's little bro, Greg, Josh Saunders, Chris Foca, and Julian Ramirez.

Princeton will have Pat Glory.

I'm sure there are other big talents who will be coming back into the mix with the Ivy's but that's all I've got for now.

Quincy Monday will be in the conversation at 157. Was great 2 years ago. Another Monday/Carr rivalry would be interesting.
