The cluster thing is real. I remember it happening in the neighboring town after an accident at a party that took the life of a popular kid. And later at Simpson...1988. I believe there were three in a year. Seems like it was going on in other places as well.

In regards to the kid, it sounds like they're looking for something that just isn't there, It never made sense at the time, and it still doesn't make sense today. It will never make sense.

Happened at SE Polk not that long ago either.

Haven’t read the article yet but how do you get “talked into” killing yourself”?

There was a case two or three years ago about a teenaged girl who talked her friend into it.

Sounds quasi cult like or something and some people will believe anything.

I remember the Heaven's Gate deal in 1997.

And in Waco iirc it wasn't suicidal necessarily but folks were willing to die for Koresh.

So Truman state is the old NE Mo State? Thought kirksville sounded familiar. One of my college roommates dated a girl from there for a bit. She was complete crazy. My roommate was getting some so he put up with it, I wouldn’t have.

Band camp? I saw a couple movies with band camp, they can get a little crazy there.

I had a lot of high school classmates who went there when it was NE Mo St and a couple of my sisters in law. They all became teachers.

Band campers in the 1970’s in fifth and sixth grade were more awkward than crazy. My friend who had an abusive father talked me into going cause she wanted to get away from him for a week. I was hoping she would talk to a counselor there or an adult would see the bruises. Was surprised he would let her go but her music was about the only thing she did he ever supported

I'm not sure if many people in here actually read that article but holy crap that is insane. IMO, definitely sounds like the Grossheim kid is a predator and talked all those people into killing themselves. Way too many people for it to be a coincidence, not to mention them all hanging themselves. Crazy situation that is really not to far from here
Sounded very much like a cult leader. I always tell myself I would see the warning signs in my kids if this started to happen, but if they were in college, man I'm not sure.

I want to say Mt Vernon had something like this about a decade back. It used to be a great little town. I haven't been there in years, but it was surprising to me

It's not like we don't have examples of this being done. I'm sure they prey on people who are having issues to begin with. Seems like students under pressure at a prestigious school would be prime targets. I loved college but it can also be extremely stressful. I still have nightmares about missing a class or test. I've come to find out that it's a very common nightmare because college for a lot of people is borderline traumatic at times.

Off topic..but former Hok, Jeff Horner is the MBB coach at Truman State. Team made it to the Elite 8/Div 2.

Quite a few Iowa kids on roster.

It's the second hardest state school in Missouri to get into. Missouri S&T is harder, when I tried to get in S&T was the second hardest public school in the country to get into behind Georgia Tech. People go to Truman because they want to go to Med School to get a DO there or at least that's what most of the people I went to high school started out doing.

Missouri S&T has an acceptance rate of 80%. It is not that hard to get into.

Peer pressure can be a powerful thing. Keep in mind that WWII Japan had a very different suicide culture, but the "kamikaze" units were voluntary. Many pilots' journals expressed misgivings about doing it, but they did it anyway.

Had a dream just the other night about missing a class or assignment etc.

Nothing traumatic but woke up really relieved that I only have a job to go to.

I wonder what the actual odds of a single person being directly connected to so many suicides. The odds have to be tiny.

I graduated from Truman State in 1995. Believe it or not, I was also a member of the same fraternity as these suicides. There was a lot of pressure at Truman state to succeed, even then. I breezed through high school, but really struggled at Truman. But three suicides all in the same fraternity?!?!? Hard to believe it's a coincidence.
