Ok so i'm in need of ideas for my TV setup using Direct TV. I would like to bring a receiver from home but I have the Genie and from my understanding I will have to buy a separate receiver! (true or false??) What's the easiest ways for everyone to watch Games on ABC, NBC, CBS, and the mothership channels with btn. Your help would be appreciated.

I currently use Direct TV Sat Go but was thinking about other options as I only get SD channels.

You are correct in that you will have to get a box that isn't part of the genie system. As far as setup goes, I have a winegard that is autotunning that I absolutely love. I would recommend that route as it seems the easiest to setup.

I fought w/ a SatGo for months, could never get it to work (worked fine on the legacy connection on a SWiM-8, just not off the case/dish...) Even tried a stationary portable dish, nothing.

I'd think an H25 receiver would be the ticket - they're a few years old so should be cheap and support whole home DVR for when it's back at home. The Winegard auto-aim dish would be great too - what do those run, price-wise?

Which Winegard do you have? I have a receiver that does not record movies in one of our rooms at home, could I use that one with it not being the main receiver? If not how much does an additional receiver cost and activation?
Thanks for the help.

Figure it is about time for a first post.....long time lurker....

I am entering the DirecTV tailgating scene this year as well. I was gifted an old 'non-SWM' dish, so it doesn't require power and just bought a used HR-24 receiver off ebay. From all of my research, as long as you buy a used 'owned' receiver, you can activate it on and off as you please, so I plan to have it activated only during FB season.

I also have the Genie at home, but I didn't wanna mess with disconnecting it every game day (or powering the SWM converter as well) - so I went with the total stand alone system. I am working on a stand for the dish this weekend.

I looked at the Winegard setup - but that was just too spendy and I figure I can align a dish eventually, right?

I did a Dish Network setup for the first time last year and it wasn't bad. Some days I just wasn't able to point it quickly but most days I pointed it in 5 minutes. The big thing is making sure you have the elevation and skew right on the dish. This website http://www.dishpointer.com/ is excellent for getting the elevation and skew for Dish Network and Directv. Enter Ames for the zip then under the satellite drop down, scroll down to multi LNB and select the one for the dish you have. It will spit out the optimum elevation and SKU just like that. Then on gameday, all you have to do is use the satellite signal tester in the settings of the receiver, have a clear line of sight of the southwest sky for the dish, then turn you dish clockwise or counter clockwise and adjust accordingly with the signal tester on the receiver. Once you get a good signal, tighten the nuts on your dish and you are done!

With the Winegard, you will not be able to get HD with Directv, only SD. I have the Winegard and love it for the auto tune ability and the SD isn’t bad on a 42 inch tv. If you want HD, the only way is to get a dish that is similar to the one on your house.

I am very anxious to try my new set up this year. Sprung on a Tailgater system with a Dish Network HD receiver. Sports package + top 200 pack = $89/month. Really like the pay as you go option.

Anyone have a similar set up ? If so, any pointers ? Assume its pretty straight forward.

I'll add another vote for the winegard setup, if you dont mind the SD (which you'll probably be fine with on a typical tailgate tv size). We used to run with a dish but getting that centered in was very hit or miss.

Thinking I may go with the Winegard as I have a 40 inch I will be taking tailgating. The Driect Tv Sat go worked good for me but just tired of having to get the signal, FOR SALE if anyone is interested. From the sounds of it SD should be fine with a larger tv.

I have a tailgater for dish network and like it but am on my 2nd one as they aren't that reliable. 1st one lasted just over 3 years of tailgating. What to get a winegard that is roof mounted auto locates and is a real dish so doesn't have to switch between sats. Also can connect 2 receivers.

I've used this system for the last 2 years, it's actually fairly easy to set-up, even without a SatFinder. Using just the tuning capabilities of the turn and TV, I always had it up and running within 10 minutes. Only way to get DirecTv in HD format. Since I was in the RV lot and always the same spot, at the end of the season, I could almost set it up without any fine tuning.

What directv receiver do you use for your winegard? I have the genie setup at my house and the only receiver that is not genie capable is my H25-100 which from my understanding I will need a SWM-840 which is roughly $100. I am thinking about just buying an additional receiver (D12-100) strictly for tailgating, anyone know what the cost would be to add this for a couple of months?
