For those interested in watching the replay of the game, here is a link to the condensed version:

I watched it and I have some thoughts.

***Note: I will be critical of some players. That doesn’t mean I’m hating on them or want them to suck and be benched. I root for everyone***

1. Pro: We didn’t play as poorly as my emotions indicated. We seemed to be have a nice rhythm most drives.

2. Con: O-Line Play. I’m going to lump TE’s in this as well. JGJ and Meeker were abysmal. Some of the pass-rushing defenders were already at their hip before they started to move. JGJ got worked regularly through out the game; Meeker’s misses were less frequent but they were big whiffs. Fortunately, some of the misses were missed assignments which hopefully will be cleaned up in the bye.

For TE’s, I missed Seonbuchner. Soenher was very underwhelming. There a few significant plays where Soehner and Kolar get WORKED while blocking.

The guards and Newell held their own for most of it.

Pro: Skill players are solid. Apart from a few drops, receiver some were making plays and blocking sufficiently. Running backs worked with what they could.

Con: Play-Calling in critical moments. For most of the game, it was solid. Sure, I wanted to see Purdy sling the ball down the field more, but we were moving the ball fine. But when I came down to converting 3rd and 4th downs, yikes. I think they tried to be cute, but it didn’t work against such a disciplined team.

Pro: Defense. They got the job done.

Con: Secondary holes. Justin Bickham struggled. He was out of position for quite a few plays and missed open field tackles. Azunna came in and missed some tackles, too.

Final thought: I think we will be ok. This team is talented and we have two weeks to tighten things up. We are 1-0.

I think having two full weeks to get better before the next game will do wonders. A win is a win, and we will have lots of tape to evaluate and make our adjustments.

I think even having a 10-0 or 13-0 lead at half would have made a difference obviously and doing things like the pass on 4th and 1 only hurt ISU. That helmet situation when they got inside the 10 in the first quarter was a bad break, and there were a couple of drops and such that kept UNI around.

Watching some games last night made me appreciate UNI's pursuit from their defense and tackling, etc. I saw some straight whiffs that UNI just didn't do.

Still trying to figure out what we are doing on punts. It looks like we were sending guys to block the punt, but no one ever really tried to block it, even though it looks like there was opportunities.

Very frustrating to rewatch that game. Lot of stupid mistakes that killed drives. There were 3 penalties that killed drives and all of them were no factor things. The tackles had a very bad day, especially in pass protection. The coaches need to figure out something that works on 3rd and 1. I still like putting the QB under center. If they don't want Purdy to run the sneak, put in a big guy, like the freshman QB.

Watching OU tonight, and then our replay of the UNI game the thing that really sticks out to me is we hardly ever pull back side O lineman to block at the point of attack. You never see the old Redskins counter trey run, where they pulled the back side guard and tackle to lead the run, and the other side blocks down. OU ran it repeatedly tonight for big yardage.
I get they have better athletes then ISU, but the Oline has just got to improve, or we need to find a coach and change the way we are blocking, because this is just not going to work, I hope I am wrong in saying that, but it looked a lot like last year, on Saturday.

We did, and Purdy got smoked because we don't have the athleticism. Breece also could have helped chip that block, but ultimately we just dont do it very well

I was talking about on running plays, but you are right Purdy got smoked on the play when the right guard did not get out and block the DE.

Bc JGJ has got to chip at the DE for a second to give Kinpfle time to get over there.. JGJ in the snap immediate went to blocking the DT...had he just blocked the DE for a count of 1 that play is fine.

It seems that our punt coverage was based on two principles: heat up the punter (but avoid the roughing penalty) and fair catch the ball.

I know CMC's #1 priority is always securing the possession, but it gets frustrating watching us fair catch when there's no defender within 10 yards. Then again, I can't recall us ever fumbling a punt return away under CMC, so I guess that's why he's our coach and I'm just a fan.

Milton fumbled on a return against KSU last year. Still, I wish they would at least try to get a return.

I thought the game went about as expected - minus the 15 yard penalty for losing a helmet (didn’t know that was a penalty) which took away a TD most likely. And Purdy’s pass / fumble that got ran back. Of those two flukes don’t happen, isu wins 24-6 or something close to that.

The offense was vanilla - trying to incorporate new rb’s and wr’s. The defense looked pretty good - missed a few sacks which they got burned on.

Overall thought they played as about my expectations were, hopefully Newall gets back soon

Meeker and JGJ were both blown up several times by UNI Linemen. Not good enough for RS Seniors. They could lose playing time IMO.

Bickham #7 missed several tackles badly. Terrible Arm Tackler. Led to some UNI big plays.. We need better angles in pursuit of QB. and containment.

We made mistakes that killed drives. Gotta finish. And I loved the part where the Announcer says the “Purdy Fumble” was an incomplete forward pass that hit the ground harmlessly. Shocked that whistle not blown and then TD allowed on the return by UNI.. The Purdy Fumble defied the Laws of Physics. It was an Incomplete Pass. It was that kind of day. But we still won.
