Rewatching this game I noticed a few things:

1) if our rbs vision was slightly better we rack up a few 20+ yard runs. Couple of them the rb chose to keep it inside after getting through the line, if they bounce it out there are some big runs there.

2). That game would’ve been much different imo if Kene played more. His quickness is much needed in our backfield. Most of the 4-5 yard runs would be bigger if our rb was just a step quicker. The holes were closing up quickly. Plus he is more of a one cut and go type of a back. I thought Lang and hall were waiting for the read too long and forced a few of those holes to close up.

3). Brock played well, but still room for improvement. A few missed reads and a few throws where if he throws it quicker we get the ball to the skill player in space faster. A few of those RPOs he could’ve ran for good yardage himself. But as we have all pointed out, the coaching staff likely told him not to run.

Overall everything I saw is fixable on film, my greatest fear is the fact that there is so much to correct we may see some of these same mistakes in 2 weeks. Regardless we are 1-0 and I trust this coaching staff to get us ready for the hoks.

I have to ask this, because I honestly don’t know. Are there lots of college quarterbacks who make every single read correctly, every time?

Or is that, say, just the Heisman contenders, the Baker Mayfields?

I clearly pointed out I thought he played well....my apologies for wanting more from our highly talented qb...

Repeating but give Hall a few more weeks to get the game to slow down for him and I think he'll play faster. Same with the offensive unit in general.

Purdy is a sophomore so him still learning is what should be expected. The key will be maximizing his skills. Hopefully the receivers get put in a spot to get more separation too.

I wasn’t being critical. I was asking a question that I don’t know the answer to. And “clearly”. I don’t pay much attention to non-ISU teams.

Legitimate question. Seriously.

Every single quarterback on any football team at any level makes bad reads or throws pretty much every game.

As much as Purdy's feet benefit him, his quick release is even more impressive imo.

I wonder if they move knipfel to the tackle?
I think this would be a bad sign. If you have spring and fall camp then decide you want to reshuffle the OL after game 1 that's a pretty big mistake. While hindsight makes it clear not starting Newell against Iowa last year was a mistake but I can see why they did it.
Both Ts struggled. I'm sure there is plenty of improvement both will make and there are some schematic adjustments that will improve the T play. However the talent at DE is taking a massive leap from UNI to TOE.

Just saying knipfel practiced at tackle during camp..

Yes he did. Downing can play both Guard spots. Put in Downing at Right Guard. Slide Knipfel to Right Tackle. Meeker loses spot. That might happen. And Good-Jones better watch out for Joey Ramos.

I think knipfel could be dominant ar rt.

Just a few observations focusing on the first few drives. We were moving on that first drive, even after the blindside block penalty. D Jones had a really bad drop on that screen play on 3rd down. If Kolar had been a yard further down field on his route on 2nd or Jones catches that 3rd down play, we keep rolling on that first drive and set the tone for a totally different game. I don’t like that screen play call on 3rd instead of cramming it down the throats of a smaller d-line, but it was more understandable than some of the calls later in the game. We had very few loss of yardage rushes and all we needed was 1-2 yards multiple times during the game that we were too cute with. UNI’s D-line was undersized but quick. That gave us fits in a few different pass protection scenarios. When they tried bull rushing us the OL held their own really well, but struggles with schemes and holding the edge against faster DE. Bigger powerful d-lines may be more in our wheelhouse. With that and 2 weeks to clean up assignments we should play better in 2 weeks.

With the Newell injury we will probably see JGJ move to center and get one of the young guys a shot at LT. I am assuming that JGJ is a decent OL, but maybe not quick enough to play LT.

Meeker and JGJ were both blown up several times by UNI Linemen. Not good enough for RS Seniors. They could lose playing time IMO.

Bickham #7 missed several tackles badly. Terrible Arm Tackler. Led to some UNI big plays.. We need better angles in pursuit of QB. and containment.

We made mistakes that killed drives. Gotta finish. And I loved the part where the Announcer says the “Purdy Fumble” was an incomplete forward pass that hit the ground harmlessly. Shocked that whistle not blown and then TD allowed on the return by UNI.. The Purdy Fumble defied the Laws of Physics. It was an Incomplete Pass. It was that kind of day. But we still won.
I thought this since last year, the existing starting OL needs to have some new blood inserted for it to become the best version of themselves if this team is to the meet expectations. A lot of starts with the existing line with mediocre results. Hoped for time to give us development but it's just not there. If the new guys can't give us a boost then it's more telling of the status of the OL as a group.

Dunno where else to leave this but I think it is from Ian Boyd who really knows his stuff. Mirrors my thoughts overall on the game plan and the fact it wasn't as bad as it seemed.
Imo his comments are saying that despite the score and near disaster, we’re a good team that nearly intentionally risked losing to an overmatched opponent. Is that a good game plan?

They didn’t start taking creative RPO shots in the red zone until OT when they realized they needed to put the game away.

The Cyclones executed their base offense and defense at a pretty solid level, but played with a governor on that limited their ability to put away a solid FCS opponent.”

Any game plan that morphs a rather strong, if not dominant effort, into needing breaks like the fortuitous fumble in 3OT to win isn’t a good plan. At the very least it is stubbornly needless risk, which has cost us in the past.

He can play T, and with the Newell injury that all makes sense- move JGJ to C, JK to T and get one of the younger guys in at G.

However, if JK is likely to be really good at T, and he's playing inside while the two tackles struggle, then I think that would have been a mistake by the staff.

It's great to have interchangeable parts, but swapping guys around to different spot has its downsides.

Good and bad that we have several guys that are kind of G and T tweeners. Good flexibility but no prototypical tackles.
