Shh. Don't be telling DSM, CR and the rest of the Iowa megalopoli that they are not rural.
I'm not doubting or disputing, but I'm the exact opposite. I'm a cattle farmer who lives in eastern iowa on a cattle farm surrounded by corn fields and cattle pastures. I have two adult female labs, 70 pounds. They routinely fight with coyotes. I've seen them fighting in the day and heard them fighting at nights. I have never been concerned about them.....but they do know how to work together as a team.
My boys - for sport- hunt coyotes. Mainly during the fall fur harvesting seasons even though they can hunt year round. The pelts are worth $5. A few years ago the pelts would bring $40 to $50 and you couldnt find a coyote around. The market got flooded and now no one wants to do it for $5.
The boys do everything from calling and rifles, night scopes, to footholds, to snares. On top of the $5 a pelt, finding farm kids who still do this are also a dying commodity ie comments above on raccoons, rabbits, skunks etc etc.
Now skunks...... those pelts are worth $20 a piece! The boys are making a fortune skinning skunks. And yes, they smell absolutely atrocious but my wife has found a very reliable and fantastic laundry detergent, soap and shampoo the boys have to instantly use when they get in. There 1st $200 went to buying a used clothes washer we put in the shop.

They're foxes. I've seen quite a few of them in Beaverdale as well

No. You are right, they are foxes, not coyotes. Saw a whole family of foxes (5) in Ames meandering down the street. Also saw a coyote pair. Love them all as I actually got to see spring flowers this year; previously, the rabbits got them before they bloomed.
A couple of times I caught a coyote on our security camera. I sent a clip of it to the IDNR District Wildlife Biologist and he identified it as a coyote. He confirmed that they are getting more numerous and to don't leave small pets outside unattended.
We live in a DM suburb with no nearby bodies of water and no forested areas or farm fields, just normal urban landscaping.

This is a zoomed in picture from the security camera and thus it is a bit fuzzy. It appears that the coyote has a small rabbit or other animal in it's mouth.

I'm guessing I live within a quarter mile of you, I remember the lady on the news a few years ago whose dog got attacked by a coyote. I drive by that house several times a week.
They put the signs up about the coyotes, and that seems to have solved it for me. Haven't seen any since.

I was hitting golf balls at the Adel driving range last year close to sundown, and started hearing coyotes off in the woods. A course employee started chatting with me about the howling, and they mentioned that people in DeSoto are upset because some residents were feeding the coyotes dog food. Not by accident. Not being careless with food meant for their pets. Intentionally feeding the coyotes
I don't know why a rational person would think that is a good idea.
