I seriously doubt this kid is walking on as a kicker. Judging by the highlights, he is walking on as a punter.

Maybe, but he wasn't a terrible kicker. He get's the ball in the air quickly and has a decent leg. He does look awful stiff though.

Mahoney finished the season 1 for 9.

1 for 9.

Could I do better? No. I also had to pay my own through school.

Great job of finding the worst possible stat you could about a guy Al.

Here's a more full picture of Mahoney's stats:

For the season he was: 8 for 17. which means in his first 8 kicks he was 7 for 8.
Of those last 9 kicks, 7 of them were from 40+ yards and 5 were from over 50+. (which btw is more than any other kicker attempted in the big12 last year)
His career average is 62% (5th best average of returning big12 kickers)
His career average for kicks under 40 yards is 75%

Can he be better, yes. Did he have a bad streak going at the end of 2010, yes. Are you being an *** and throwing a player under the bus because of a couple of bad games, yes.

He's had another off season to get better and work on consistency and to get his confidence back. With a little help from the offense/staff not putting him out there in 50+ situations all the time, I don't see why Mahoney can't be an solid 75-80% FG kicker this year.

Why are there literally 20 people in the stands? I thought hs football is big in Texas.

I wondered that too. Where are all the people? We had more people in the stands for JV football games than that.

I don't have any problem bringing in a kid like this, letting him redshirt and if he's good enough, then he gets a scholarship in 2012. ISU isn't out anything and the kid gets a chance to prove himself and earn a scholarship. Of course, if it's a punter rather than kicker, he's going to have to wait awhile.

This is not me...

I am walking on to AIB's basketball team.. not Iowa State's football team as a kicker.. even though that would be sweet...

That is all...

one of my friends is going to AIB next year too

This is completely fair. I'm not shy about being hard on Grant - but your post is full of accurate facts that paint the entire picture.

A perfect sign of an inconsistent offense that lacks the ability to move the ball - lies in the distance of the kickers FG attempts. It's no coincidence that our offense in fact did severely struggle to move the ball with any real consistency and Mahoney attempted the most long kicks in the conference.

This is not to say Grant doesn't need to improve or we don't need competition at the position - both are needed. But Grant is not the horrible kicker people like to make him out to be. Our offense, first and foremost, was horrible.

How may Big12 kickers are returning?

Interesting that he wants to paint an accurate picture then leaves that stat out. There are 6 returning kickers next season. So Mahoney is better than 1 returning kicker in terms of career accuracy. He was also 14/16 kickers who attempted a kick last season, in terms of FG accuracy. Last of the 12 starters and the two guys he beat were 0-1 and 1-4 as the back up kickers for Colorado and TTech. No doubt he started the year well, but kickers get remembered for the kicks they make when the season is on the line.

Why don't you take a look and see how many of those 9 FG tries were from beyond 40 yards. It's true he had a bad day against Missouri, missing some chip shots, but most of the rest of those misses were from beyond 40 yards and I believe even beyond 45 yards, though I don't want to take the time to check.

Wow. A highlight film featuring a bunch of extra points using a placement tee (illegal in college) and line-drive punts and kickoffs. Not that impressive in my book.

And there were like 5 people in the stands. Did he play JV?

I actually met this kid at my Freshmen Orientation on Tuesday and Wednesday. He said that he has come up to the ISU football camp the past 2 years and won the kicking part of it. Very nice kid, and majoring in Business! Said that they had 14,000 people at one of their High School games :wideeyed:
