I haven't noticed anything else and I'm doing a spysweeper check and AVI check, but my desktop is minus all its icons and the windows format (the look of all the windows and menu bars) is not old school not the standard Vista that I had before. Any ideas what the hell I got into or how to put it all back?

I dont want to go that route as it doesnt seem as serious yet. The programs are all here and the files as well. I di back up my pictures just in case something gets wacky.

Have you tried this

To resolve this behavior, turn on the Show Desktop Icons feature:
Right-click the desktop.
Point to Arrange Icons By.
Click Show Desktop Icons.

I did that and teh basics come back. It didnt put everything else back of course. I also checked and didnt even see the Vista layout to replace it. I'm not too worried about those symptoms I'm just wondering what caused them. AVG is up to date and ran and spysweeper deleted 15 things but they generally arent a big deal.

Maybe your computer is feeling guilty from that Survivor victory?

I doubt it, neither its nor my memory is that good :)
Thanks for letting me win though.

Well spysweeper removed something useful cause everything is back upon restart, however opening IE still causes a new window to open to directdr.com, which spysweeper promptly blocks. Clearly I still need to dig and find something else to wipe out!

UPDATE:
I found a tool that worked well and seems to have removed the mess. Thanks for the thoughts. If anyone else has this problem I can find you the link.

please send me the link. i had the same thing happen after visiting this site and the IT dept had to come and get my computer to solve. they have had it since last thurs and have identified viruses but it still does not work-something about unable to get an ip address. this despite system restore up to a month ago and reinstalling needed software for internet connectivity.

I had some missing icons on some websites and some minor delays with some pages loading so I updated my Adobe Flash and Shockwave players. Everything is back to normal.
