What is a true fan?

I went to ISU and graduated from ISU.

For anyone to think that because they graduated from ISU they are a better or "classier" fan than someone that didn't is absolutely asinine. Totally ridiculous.

Frankly, I question the supposed fans who post things like "We are done going to bowl games" after the Big 12 went to 10...that is some fan...huh? Or the ones that think we should hang onto a coach that is clearly not getting the job done...because he is supposedly a "great" guy that "wants to be here". Or the ones that believe the best ISU can ever hope for is mediocrity and we will never be able to compete with Texas, for example. You get the point.

I want a big tent of ISU fans that are committed both financially and emotionally to the university and its athletics department...being a graduate is not a prerequisite.

I actually grew up rooting for the Hawks. My whole family was Hawkeye fans and that was all I knew.

After High School I enrolled at ISU and have never looked back. I have grown to hate Iowa as much as any ISU fan and love the Clones just as much.

I never turn away a fellow ISU fan, this is one of the reasons that I was so upset when JP sent the email to that kid. I dont want to take over this thread with that so please dont justify what he did, that has been discussed plenty.

My take is that if you want to root for ISU then by all means DO IT. You are welcome at our tailgate anytime. Who cares if you didnt go to ISU, most likely you have given more to ISU in the form of support as well as financially than the fans who are calling you out.

You are a fan, you don't have to prove it to anyone. My wife graduated from ISU, I donated over $10k in my year "enrolled" there, and had season tickets for 3 years in basketball/football before we moved out east. Just sac anyone who tells you different. Also, stinks you never got to play for the Clones, that would have been pretty cool!

I graduated from Wartburg and St. Ambrose. I still consider myself a fan. I figure as long as the alumni association keeps sending me stuff to joing the ISU alumni association... they must too :)

Wish there were more fans like you, FarminCy. Anyone who tells you different is just looking for a way to feel superior. Attending the school is great and can create a close attachment, but growing up a fan like you did is equal.

I just don't see how going to a school for 4 years creates more of an attachment than 35 years of being a fan.

Attachment to the University is deeper than strickly following athletics and being a fan of the athletic teams.

I am saying if you spend 4,5,6 yrs of your life attending/working at/etc. Iowa State University, you are undeniably more attached to the University than someone who did not.

That cannot be argued.

Doesn't make one person more of a "fan" than another. That is an athletic argument. I'm talking about Iowa State University which is ALOT bigger than just athletics.

The only thing that gets me sometimes is when someone says "we" when referring to a professional sports team. I don't understand how that can be "we" unless you play for the team, have played for the team, or have a family member playing for the team. As far as college sports goes, I think it is a lot easier to feel connected with that school and athletic program due to attending the school yourself, family members attending, and those situations.

Actually that can be argued. Just because that is your personal experience doesn't hold that true for every cyclone fan. I've met people at ISU who aren't even Cyclone fans at all, instead hawk fans or uni fans. What's your reasoning for that? Surely they are "undeniably" more attached than someone like the OP, right? Sorry but you're way off here

I'm with ya farmincy, walkingcy and anyone else who thinks that is way off base. I think it's awesome you are a State fan and didn't go to ISU, we need more of that.

And in that Woodbury thread, whoever took the jab at his parents for not going to college, thats a low blow. That is their choice and if they can make it work for them then they should be able to do that without being ridiculed. There are a lot of people out there with no degree who are very succesful at what they do.

My roomate at ISU was a Hawk fan. He went to ISU because of the great Engineering program and it was in-state tuition.

You, my friend, are more of a Cyclone than my old roommate could ever dream of becoming.

And your number one priority in college choice should be education. I have friends at the UofI who are die-hard clones, but want to get into the medical field so they went to Iowa. You can't be serious when you say they should have gone to ISU because they like their sports teams and give up their dream of a medical degree, can you?

Not what I was saying. I was saying if you were already an ISU fan and then attended the University after growing up a Cyclone that it strengthens your bond more than someone who is a grew up a fan but did not attend.

The "if you didn't go to school X, you're not a true fan" argument is, in a word, stupid. I couldn't care less where you went to college, if you even went at all. If you like Iowa State and proudly wear the colors at games, while out with your friends, at work, etc, it's all good in my book.
