From the picture, I would guess it was a rotating 3 way switch that the knob and post are missing from.

This might help you figure it out. Red and Yellow wires tend to be on switches. I am an accountant and not an electrician, so my knowledge is somewhat limited.

Where is it located? Close to the floor or more light switch lever. Is it hot? Lick your index finger and thumb and grab any wire but the green one and see if you feel any juice. If you answer this I will assume you didn’t.
