Have they said why CuJo might get another year? I dont understand it because he's played 4 non-covid seasons in the NCAA, 2 years at Buffalo & 2 years at ISU. His 1 year in juco didn't count by the NCAA anyways since it was during the covid year.
The only reasoning I can see: there's been talks of allowing 5 years of college eligibility and basically getting rid of redshirts. Just saying "you have 5 years of eligibility, whether you're playing, or not". So if that gets ruled on this summer, maybe he gets granted the 5th year based on that.

But, if that happens, it seems like it'd also apply to Gilbert and Chatfield, so it still makes no sense why they think Jones could get another year.

on CuJo, the NCAA ruled that Juco doesn’t count against your 4 years of eligibility but Curtis was at Indian Hills the Covid season so it didn’t count against his 4 years. The possibility exists that they’ll just say anyone that played Juco has an extra year, not taking covid year into account. Thats why it’s a small possibility.

Hoping Jackson is back because if we lost both him and Chatfield getting 2 bigs in the portal becomes a huge priority. JT Rock doesn't look ready for the part to even be the primary backup post at this point and there are no bigs in this incoming freshman class either.

Not sure how you could say that definitively about JT as there was little chance he was going to play this year behind two upper class big men. Not saying he will start, but a 7 footer with two years in the system seems like he should be able to fill spot minutes behind a quality transfer big after another summer.

I hope he takes a big step forward in his development before next season but in the limited minutes we've seen him so far this year I haven't seen enough to make me think he could be part of an 8 man rotation next year. He has size but he's not nearly as nimble moving around the floor that he would need to be playing the style of play we do on both ends. Hope I am wrong on my analysis, just my opinion from what I have seen while out there that he does not look like he's ready to play meaningful minutes yet.

It is clear we are lacking a pure athlete down low. Jefferson, Jackson, Chatfield, Milan, etc all below the rim players.

Agree. Need a rim protector that can also rebound.

Agree to your agree. Jackson is not the rebounder we thought he was going to be and gets into foul trouble too easily. Hopefully there’s a guy in the portal that can give us that. We don’t need a big time scorer and just need someone to rebound and protect the paint.

_Some_ scoring would help...a lot.

History doesn't seem to be on the side of ISU grabbing this ideal post player, or whatever that position is called nowadays, out of the portal. And with the anti-emphasis on post play in the AAU-type leagues for the upcoming players, it's probably not easy to find that player.

I really think that any non-blue blood coaching staff needs to have a skilled "big man" assistant on staff. Get the bodies out of the portal, coach the hec out of them, and hopefully come late February, you've got a couple of guys coached up to handle the position.

It’s an offseason conversation but since we’re basically in a salary cap era and it’s not just about scholarships, uncomfortable for some conversations will need to happen about Jackson. Hope he has a great end to the year though.
I expect him back and I expect him to improve significantly with a full off-season working with S&C team and Kyle Green.
How much did Rob Jones improve from year to year? I'd say a lot.

I think we'd have to change some of what we do, because whatever the improvement, I don't see him being a run the floor guy. Just doesn't seem built for that, but I think if does improve and does maintain the outside shot he had coming in, it would be worth changing it up a bit. We'll see

Only if he has Rob’s intangibles.

Player development is largely about recruiting imo. Rob Jones was an elite culture guy, and that includes his drive to improve

but didn't he play 2 years at Buffalo and 2 years at ISU? He wasn't playing NCAA basketball during the covid season (unless you consider NJCAA part of NCAA, which goes against what I thought is the main argument that JUCO doesn't count toward NCAA eligibility), so as much as I'd love him back, it'd take some weird bending of rules (even the new ones) to grant him a 5th D1 season.

Because the NCAA has no backbone

Jackson isn't a great rebounder, but he's solid. He's averaging 10.4 reb per 40 minutes. Jefferson is at 10.3. Chatfield 8.6.

Last year Robert Jones - 7.4. Hassan Ward - 9.6. Tre King -9.1.
Not arguing with your numbers, but here is where I think stats can be misleading.

Watching them play all year: Jefferson and Chatfield are much better rebounders than Jackson. Jackson's rebound radius is so small.

The numbers are closer on a per 100 basis and rebounding %

I wonder if the current group benefits from not being asked as much to defend away from the paint

So I know its early but given ISU's love of former Wazzu players this is an interesting one.
Not saying he is talking transfer, or anything. But those guys tend to find their way to ISU

In that league he is top 5 in minutes, Points, Minutes, Steals, assists,
