What the expanded playoffs have revealed is how questionable previous "national champions" have been

You think the Broncos and the Bills were equal in that game just played?

What you really mean is some teams are brand names aren’t
That is not at all what I mean. Both teams are NFL squads, with the same number of draft picks, the same salary caps, etc. Again the NFL is not college and making comparisons just doesn’t make sense.

It's still sport. Determine it on the field.

I think a lot of fans of teams in the Big 10 and SEC are starting to realize that they are going to go 7-5 at best every year and never have the chance to compete for a title so they want to make sure only the top teams from their said conferences get in so they can ride their coat tails and mooch more money off of them.

“yeah but the NFL doesn’t do it”

Not saying it’s right or wrong but if anyone doesn’t think the seeding and bye process will be changed in CFB either this year or next year is crazy.

It definitely will be changed in CFB. But no way does the NFL go to awarding byes based on win percentage. He even says ownership hasn’t shown appetite for that

Would you guys like it if Utah State got a #1 seed if they win out and finish 28-1 this March? They won the games on the court.

It’s more the fact that they are entertaining it.

Again, what wasn’t determined on the field. You keep saying this, in what way was something not determined on the field?

We can't even agree on what it means to be "national champion." What does it mean to be the "best" team?
  • Best athletes?
  • Best coaches?
  • Best record?
  • Most likely to beat every other team?
  • Beat more/the most good teams during the season?
Especially when most of the things that correlated with being a "great" team are largely driven by budget? Is a single elimination tournament even the best way to determine the "best team?"

After watching the first year, I’d suggest:
  1. Going to a 16-team model and eliminating the byes.
  2. Play simultaneous or slightly staggered games the first weekend (to help ratings if one game is a blowout), like March Madness does.
  3. Have the first two rounds be played at home sites, transitioning to neutral bowl sites for the semis and championship. This would help attendance/ticket revenue which was pretty poor for this years quarterfinals.
  4. Conference champs earn an auto-bid and home game to maintain an incentive to win the conference
  5. With 16 teams I’d eliminate the conference championship games and use that weekend for first round games. That also prevents conflict with the NFL(for now).

So if you're eliminating CCG (#5), how do you determine the conference champions/auto qualifiers (#4) when four teams tie for first at 7-2?

You’d have to use tiebreakers. I’d leave it up to each conference to determine its tiebreakers.

the city is BAD

They've always given back to South Bend. Blame the people running the city. I don't think Notre Dame is even technically in South Bend anyway. Plus, think of all of the money pumped into South Bend's economy because of Notre Dame.

16 teams from multiple conferences is the only way to do it. If teams get in the playoff from a weak division and they get waxed (Iowa) in the post season so be it. The cream will rise to the top.

8 teams, and 7 of them from two conferences, would suck.

How would adding 4 more teams that would lose make this years playoff better? You said you wanted it determined on the field and I’m asking how it’s currently not

Not exactly sure.

Have a 16 team round robin, that will determine it. Will finish about the time of spring practice. That’s another 13 weeks of football.
