What the heck is going on at Michigan?

As long as the coach's trailer wasn't damaged, I'm sure he's OK with everything.

You don't even realize how much of a dump West Virginia is until you drive through. It's a third world state. It's a **** stain on the underpants of America.

Your name would suggest to me you have something to do with Wisconsin and the Cyclones. May I remind that in Michigans worst year ever they beat Wisconsin and most likely would have beat ISU last year. I am just saying.

Now, as a Michigan fan, I am not at all shocked by this. It has seemed there has been a lot of disgruntled former players. I will say that if this all is found to be true through investigations, Rich Rod will most likely be gone unless he wins the Big Ten. I think Michigan still wants Les Miles and they will eventually get him. Rich Rod better watch himself because if this stuff is true, he is in deep ****. Michigan prides themselves on tradition and they will not take losing AND being investigated. After all this I really do believe that this season is make or break. They better compete.

WI had Michigan dead to rights until their stupid *** coach got an unsportsmanlike pentalty. (former hawk.)

Could Michigan take winning AND being investigated?? Win and so much for the pride and tradition. Wow.

Sure. I get tired of hearing about how Michigan is above all the stuff that goes on at other schools. They talk the talk, but they don't walk the walk. Not only did they hire RR, but have you forgotten booster Ed Martin, Coach Steve Fisher, and the "Fab Five" basketball team?

Somebody has apparently never driven I-80 across the great state of Nevada.

I do your find your pigeon-holing of an entire state and population to be somewhat....interesting.

Haven't done I80 through Nevada, but I have been in West Virginia multiple times. I'm convinced they are stuck in 1880. People around the US think we are a state full of hicks....we don't even go into WV's league.

My brother was in WV for a few days back in 2005. 30% of the houses in the town they were staying didn't have indoor plumbing.

Yeah, Les Miles is as straight as they come......

Could Michigan take winning AND being investigated?? Win and so much for the pride and tradition. Wow.

I would be willing to bet that more teams break these so called "practice rules" than follow them. I highly doubt Les Miles is straight with everything going on too, however he is a Michigan Man. RR is not. There were quite a few people that were not happy with RR being hired. He was in somewhat of a hole already, then he went 3-9. Les Miles would not have gone 3-9. Yes, RR did bring a different system, but he had more talent on his team than most of the teams he played and yes Manningham, Mallett, and Arrington most likely left because of this change. As far as being investigated, let's keep in mind right now just the University is investigating, not the NCAA.

This investigation, to me is going to be tough. It seems like there are a lot of gray areas in these rules regaurding what counts and what doesn't count as time. We will see what happens, but I don't really see RR at Michigan next year. I just don't think he fits in with what the Michigan fans want.

Yeah and we had Kansas dead to rights until the third quarter except it took a half for us to lose while I believe Wisconsin lost a 19 point lead in the fourth quarter.

I'm pretty sure it took us less than 14 minutes of the third quarter to throw away a 20 point lead...I think we blew it before the third quarter ended because I remember us being down heading into the 4th and wondering why I wasn't shocked that we could pull that off...

We were down 1 going into the fourth and scored 13 points including a touchdown late and getting an onside kick giving us a chance to win. Actually we were about a yard from winning that game on a pass from Arnaud to Sumrall. Wisconsin simply blew up in the last ten minutes of the fourth quarter and Michigan won.

I just watched Rich Rod's press conference and then read this thread. A few musings:

1) Every school in America (and most certainly the top tier teams) are stretching this 20 hours per week rule to the max.

2) I always find it interesting that many of the ISU faithful automatically assume that when someone has success that they must be doing some major cheating. I don't recall Rodriguez having ever really been accused of major cheating at WVU. Correct me if I am wrong.

3) It seems clear that there is a pretty strong element in Michigan that wants a Michigan man coaching Michigan and not a West Virginia man. I think the buzzards are swirling over Rodriguez.

4) If Miles has another 8-5 season this year at LSU the for sale signs will begin appearing in his front yard. He won his National Championship at LSU with a roster full of Nick Saban's recruits...last year was almost entirely a team he recruited and this year there are no longer any Nick Saban holdovers.

5) The talent to be recruited in the upper midwest states that Michigan recruits like Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania has really started to fall off. Did any of you see the HS game on ESPN this past Saturday...a team from Fort Lauderdale absolutely *****-slapped a team from Ohio at the Horseshoe in Columbus.

6) The Big 10 has been and is a very week conference because of a dwindling talent pool in their area. Now they are going to the south to recruit but they are getting mostly sloppy seconds. I was at a HS game on Friday night. One team had a kid going to Michigan (only about 5-8 180lbs and not that fast) and the other had a kid going to Northwestern (6-2 200lbs but did nothing in the game). Neither of these kids would be offered scholarships in the SEC by any school.

Please. I find it interesting that the RR apologists rush to defend him with the ole "everyone's doing it" without any supporting evidence.
I don't believe blatant violations like this are common at all. It appears to me that Michigan is so desperate for a winner that they're giving RR a blank check. He's in serious trouble now.

I can't believe this is making this much news....the big programs have always abused the "voluntary" and "mandatory" practice rules. Just this summer, my uncle darn near got his camera taken away for taking pictures at a "voluntary" practice.

You don't think that coaches all over America are stretching that 20 hours per week rule? Really?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Rich Rodriguez leaving his alma mater, home state, and program on the verge of dynasty to walk into the mess in Ann Arbor is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. Instead of essentially having a lifetime contract and almost guaranteed shot at BCS, he'll probably get **** canned in 2 years, and have to coach at UAB or something like that.

Yep, and I said the same thing about Billie Gillespie leaving aTm to coach at Kentucky. It's the same thing minus the alma mater part.

I applaud the Detroit Free Press for investigating this matter - too many papers (like apparently in West Virginia) would be scared to.

A few things:

+ I am no Rich Rod apologist.

+ Where is your righteous indignation over all of the accusations of cheating in this thread that have no supporting evidence?

+ You are just plain naive if you think that many DI schools are not stretching this rule to the max...I would bet ISU has its fair share of "voluntary" activities that most of the players would, if honest, tell you are really "mandatory". This is probably one of the easiest rules to massage and stay within the confines of the rule.

From listening to Deace this morning, the "columnist" who broke the story is very old school and didn't like the Rich Rod hire to begin with. This isn't going to end well, much the same way the Callahan era did @ Nebraska.
