Is there a better dog out there than a black lab? I'd say nah.
Sounds like starting 5 for ferret basketball plus one sub in case someone fouls out.
We currently have a 3 year old German Shephard and a 7 year old not-so-miniature Dachshund. We had to put our old German Shephard (10-1/2 years old) to sleep on the 4th of July which sucked because she was such an awesome dog - she prompted the buying of the second (current) one. All three we've had since they were puppies. We probably won't have another Dachshund - the hound traits are really strong (stubborn, follows his nose above all else, barks/howls all the time).
We also have two cats, about 11 and 9 years old that we've had since kittens.
And we have a Guinea Pig.
Before we got married, my wife had a budgie that we lived with for a couple years, and we also had a Netherland Dwarf Rabbit for about 8 years. That rabbit was an awesome pet - tons of attitude for a prey animal, not scared of anything. I'd love to have a rabbit again, but it's just not gonna happen with a Dachshund in the house. Our old German Shephard was great with that rabbit too, by the way.
Oh, and three daughters...
My wife is worried about socializing a new puppy with cats, anyone know what to do in that situation?
It shouldn't be a problem because they will sort it out over the course of a month or so. The cats will hate you for a while and the puppy will find out quickly what it can and cannot get away with. But the cats will be able to stay away from the puppy/dog as much as they want. The cats will rule the roost - I've got an 80 lb German Shephard who is deathly afraid of our oldest cat (who's declawed) to prove it. When the dog is laying on the couch and the cat jumps on the couch within a couple feet, the dog slinks off the couch with her ears down and goes into her kennel. Sometimes I think the cat just messes with the dog because he can. Kinda like this: http://www.wimp.com/catsdogs/
That said, the bastard cat didn't have any problems with either of the two older dogs...
