What will ISU be ranked?

For anyone thinking we should be higher, I would point out two things objectively.

Memphis win is not worth what it was at the time. Onbiously a win is a win, but value of said win will decline if they continue to decline. The Iowa win probably means more to us as rivals than it does to media or other coaches. It is another quality win, but - if we’re setting emotion aside - looks like a big margin against unranked team at home. Stated differently, win at the Phog against unranked Iowa team means less to Kansas than it does us.

Make no mistake, we have numerous quality wins. Best one right now looks like Xavier on neutral court. The fact that we’ve played bottom feeders otherwise and that we struggled with some (if you’re a voter looking at final scores) doesn’t help.

In terms of our program, the fact that we’re talking about a ranking at all is crazy. Even the biggest homers would not have anticipated this. Whether we’re 9, 11, or 26 doesn’t really matter. Hopefully TJ and company capitalIze on this in terms of recruiting.

Big 12 is going to be a grind. Especially to start. Entirely possible we fall out, people say this was a fluke, and then we climb back in with a more favorable schedule on the back end.

I might have typed something wrong. More detail below and a new insight.

The team is 10-0 (0-0) right now. Here is what is is giving me...

View attachment 93265

W over SELA, Chicago State, and Missouri = 13-0

Within the Big 12...

W
---
Texas Tech
Texas
TCU
@ West Virginia
Kansas State
@ TCU
Oklahoma
West Virginia
@ Kansas State
Oklahoma State

L
---
Baylor
@ Oklahoma
@ Kansas
@ Texas Tech
@ Oklahoma State
Kansas
@ Texas
@ Baylor

Looks like 0-2 against Baylor and Kansas.
Split 1-1 with Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State.
Sweep 2-0 against West Virginia, TCU, and Kansas State.

= (10-8) in the Big 12

= 23-8 (10-8) overall

Something that I noticed...

Good gosh the Big 12 schedule is frontloaded. That projection above is projecting the team to start 1-3 in the Big 12, needing tough wins at home against Texas and on the road in Lubbock to avoid going 1-5 to start the conference slate, and eventually ending up 3-7 before going on a 7-1 tear (including a seven-game winning streak, the only loss being the B12 finale against Baylor in Waco) to end up 10-8. Going to be a heck of a coaching job to keep the team's chin up against the first half of the Big 12 schedule.
Adding up the probabilities, our record projects to 22.68 - 8.32

Don't disagree... But if you go by resume alone, I would argue that ISU is a top 10 team this week. Obviously, if you factor in talent, expectations, "eye test" qualifiers... I get it. In the end, not too worried about it. We will prove we are or find out we are not soon enough. B12 will be brutal.

Just would point to villanova, and usc specifically. Sure, higher expectations going in, better talent on paper, etc.

But go through their schedules... The resume for the Cyclones I would argue is better. again, not too concerned about it. It will take care of itself. Just interesting to look at.

My guess is 9. Villanova has to drop after getting beat soundly by Creighton. Think Alabama drops out of top 10 after the Memphis loss. Anyone paying attention (which is obviously not the case for all AP voters) should see the significance of both those games as it relates to our ranking.

Don’t think anyone behind us did anything impressive enough to jump us and don’t think we did anything impressive enough to justify jumping teams that didn’t lose.

Here is the 2 nitwits who didn't rank ISU last week -- they'll have to be extremely creative not to include Iowa State this time.

DeCock
12 Villanova
17 Xavier
20 San Francisco
21 UConn

Crepea
19 North Carolina
20 UConn
21 Michigan
22 BYU
23 Texas Tech
24 Xavier
Villanova and North Carolina got blown out this week
