For anyone thinking we should be higher, I would point out two things objectively.
Memphis win is not worth what it was at the time. Onbiously a win is a win, but value of said win will decline if they continue to decline. The Iowa win probably means more to us as rivals than it does to media or other coaches. It is another quality win, but - if we’re setting emotion aside - looks like a big margin against unranked team at home. Stated differently, win at the Phog against unranked Iowa team means less to Kansas than it does us.
Make no mistake, we have numerous quality wins. Best one right now looks like Xavier on neutral court. The fact that we’ve played bottom feeders otherwise and that we struggled with some (if you’re a voter looking at final scores) doesn’t help.
In terms of our program, the fact that we’re talking about a ranking at all is crazy. Even the biggest homers would not have anticipated this. Whether we’re 9, 11, or 26 doesn’t really matter. Hopefully TJ and company capitalIze on this in terms of recruiting.
Big 12 is going to be a grind. Especially to start. Entirely possible we fall out, people say this was a fluke, and then we climb back in with a more favorable schedule on the back end.
