I’ve had similar question. They did start the season ranked where we did not. And have gone undefeated as well - although no impressive wins as you point out. That’s the only explanation I can think of. They have played really good defense this year holding each of their opponents to under 40% so possible the analytics like them too (I’m too lazy to actually look it up).

It's probably just starting the season ranked. These poll voters don't go much deeper than that.

Again, this explains all these dimwits: https://kenpom.com/

They think they are being smart by using overall KenPom. DeCock uses KenPom rankings and says things like “45th best” when describing teams.

Iowa -23
Xavier -25
ISU -45

USC has beaten absolutely nobody and they aren’t a name program. How are they ranked higher than us? I know it means nothing and we have a tough schedule coming up but at some point logic has to enter the equation.

They went to the Elite 8 last season and recruit at a high level. USC is a big brand in any sport.

Essentially, fans don't like opposing fanbases that are loud and proud. If those loud and proud fans live in your neighborhood, the dislike gets more intense. We get annoyed by fans who mirror our behavior in different colors.

It's funny to hear them call us arrogant. KU basketball fans are as arrogant as they come, and I take pleasure in annoying the hell out of them in KC. We like to have fun that weekend. Deal with it.

This X 1000.

And if we're being honest, we're not any different in this respect. I think back to the 2014-15 college basketball season when (at the very least a vocal minority of fans on this website) were absolutely furious with UNI for having a really good team that year that won a bunch of games and got into the rankings and eventually overtook ISU in said rankings. One would have thought it was the Hawkeyes doing all that based on the reaction by quite a few people on here. One poster even started a thread about UNI fans discussing NCAA tournament seeds as a "burn" of sorts, because a fan base talking about their team's postseason tournament is obviously so far beyond the pale to be remarkable as to merit having a thread dedicated to making fun of that fan base.

It's not just in-state rivals either; I remember a few years ago (maybe even the same season) a poster on here actually writing a post complaining about how loud and enthusiastic Wichita State fans were being. Apparently only us Cyclone fans are allowed to be proud and passionate fans, at least according to that poster.

Lauren Brownlow, of WRAL sports (ACC), moved us down 8 spots this week! She had us #17 in week 7 and #25 in week 8. Gary Parrish should of never stopped writing that Poll Attacks column.

Week 7

Week 8

I've come to realize she has no consistency in her ranking process.

(edit/addition -- it isn't isolated to Iowa State's placement/fluctuation)

Media really trying to keep the big ten relevant with Michigan state that high. Their best wins are pretty meh
Their schedule looks pretty tough until you factor in that Loyola, UConn, Louisville, and Butler are not what they usually are. But not as though they’ve been playing a ton of cupcakes. Two losses are to KU and Baylor which most teams in the country would lose to. I have no problem with them being ranked, but does seem high.

Scott Drew always has a great game plan against us. We are going to have to be ready and anticipate that. Interested to see this matchup but also TJ vs Drew. This is by far the best coach TJ has ever gone up against.

Drew is undoubtedly great but TJ's seen Mark Few, Bill Self, Roy Williams and Bob McKillop. That's 4 Hall of Famers. It's not like he's never been exposed to this level.

I still stand by my statement. Drew is currently the best coach in America, IMO.

No one is doubting that Drew is a great coach, but that’s not what you said. You said this is by far the best he’s ever been up against. That got called out and shown he’s coached against 4 hall of fame coaches….

Drew is on the cusp of HOF status himself. Either way, lots of questions will be answered Saturday.

He is very good. And to be honest the only question to be answered Saturday is if Baylor is #1. Because ISU doesn't need anymore "this game will be the test" if they are for real. They are. And if Baylor plays like what I saw at Oregon, I am certain they will not be #1 come Monday.
