You should come to Houston and check out the CyFair school district as the starting Teacher pay is like $42,000. Cost of living here is not bad either....

Here is their website: Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District

My wife was looking into teaching as she was close to graduating in Spring of 2006 and the area around Las Vegas was so desperate for teachers, they offered houses, yes houses as part of there teaching package, if you wanted a bigger house than offered, they would put a down payment for you, one of our friends got a $175k towards a home purchase, dont know how this works or how long you have to stay in the district, but it was definately tempting along with a $46k package, granted cost of living is higher out there.

A lot of places are doing things like that, or offering to pay off student loans, paying for a MA degree, coaching endorsements, or getting a teaching endorsement in other areas than you're currently licensed in.

How long until you graduate?

On the Pension subject: Ripvdub has a pension with Deere (or will when he retires) and I usually go on the assumption that it will not be there at that point. I don't know what his union contract "guarantee" is on it, but I feel more comfortable using it as icing rather than the cake.

The Malibu has been earning lots of praise.

We have a Saturn Aura, its very nice, all the options and it was only 24k, cant beat the price and GM quality, but I dont want to turn this into a car thread or a manufacturer thread...unless it was your first job

Journalism and Mass Communication, Spring 2002.

First job was as the producer of the morning show at the number 3 TV station in Sioux City. Worked overnights. Pay sucked. Hated it. And after four months, they cancelled the morning show and let me go. It was NOT my fault. That place was circling the drain long before I got there. A year later they let go of their entire 6 and 10 PM news team and replaced them with the weekend people to save money.

Anyway, now I'm back in Ames working in video production and liking it much better. (Pay is much better too, though not as much as the engineers on here. Holy crap!)

Video production is fun. I did a lot of that when I did my internship at WQAD in Moline...

16 weeks of me being scared as hell teaching.

Good luck with that - I've got a friend who is student teaching this semester too.

Heh heh I remember having student teachers in high school... my favorite was the one we had for PE rec swimming class. That class could be fun, but that particular semester there were all of like 10 of us in the class, and they gave it to the football coach so that he could concentrate on coaching (not officially of course)
Not only did they give him the class with 10 people, but they gave him a student teacher too! (he pretty much never showed up)

We had fun with her though, for her last day we had aranged ahead of time to bring extra clothes with us - we put them on over our swim suits and went out on the deck in them. We told her we had decided not to dress for the day (she was pretty bummed) then we staged a fight and knocked each other into the pool (fully dressed)

She was pretty cool, we were sad to see her go (We DID walk all over her, but we were fairly nice about it)

The BA in 1997 (not ISU) in Econ and Mgmt didnt do didley - temp gigs and a retail management job at 29k. So, back to school for a MCRP at ISU and 36k out the door, since then added a MPA and switched jobs. Not going to be rich but they pay has gotten a lot better and I have a pension that shouldnt ever go away.

not many business guys in here huh

Finance major, first job out of college(still in it) working as a loan officer for Wells Fargo, base is 27k with exponential commission possiblity. The base hasnt changed in 3 years (part of 06,all of 07,beginning of 08) , but I am guessing that is because of the commission aspect, either way you cant beat getting 20 days of paid time off right out of college.

Ah yes, this includes sick days doesnt? I wish my employer would do this. Whats the benefit to the company of me calling in randomly sick 10 days this year? I never get sick yet I have a co-worker who you can count on being sick the day before/after of a 3 day weekend.

I get 2 weeks plus any gov't holiday plus comp time(after hours on call)

Work for ISU. 24 days of vacation a year and 18 days of sick leave a year. Sick leave never maxes out and vacation maxes somewhere around 384 hours. If you get enough sick leave you can convert it to vacation at 4/1.

Started as Graphic Design major, got weeded out, became an Art & Design major with a 2nd major in JL/MC (emphasis in Advertising). First job out of ISU was Composition Manager for the Story Co. Advertiser. Worked there until I moved to Carroll. There I worked for a short period selling copiers, then at Pella Corp before settling in at the Carroll Daily Times Herald for 8 years. Been working freelance since then.
