That is my plan, pack up the luggage tomorrow and we plan on being on the road by 4:00 AM. Get outside of St. Louis and stop for gas and go to the RR.

They road well when we road tripped out to S. Carolina a couple of years ago, and are now 11 and 9. they have their tablets, and headphones, plus one will be in the 2nd row and the smallest all they in the 3rd row. Hopefully keeping the grab ass to a minimum.

Can you live stream the gas, food and bathroom breaks and submit to a public caning if any of them surpass five minutes?

Thanks in advance.

I’m never msking that drive again. Driving to the Pop Tarts bowl, the traffic from Chattanooga to about 4 hours past Atlanta was just brutal.

More and more I just try to travel whenever nobody else is. No holidays, no Friday nights, try to avoid summer for early fall and late spring when I can. I’m using holiday 3 day weekends to do stuff at home then travel before or after that weekend. I never regret it and the few times I break those rules I usually do regret it.

When you have a bunch of kids in school you don’t really have a choice.

Looked at Chevy, GMC, and Hummer EV’s last night, nice. The Hummer looks great. But, since my banker wants me to pay off my loans in January, I don’t think he will believe I bought a new tractor. If I have a great bean crop, and sell all of my beans, I might have enough $$ to buy one.

No problem, I'll get right on that on Friday.

Some things to help you:
- Have the credit card out and ready to swipe while the car is still moving, that could take a crucial 20 seconds if you have to fumble through your wallet. Obviously actually going into a convenience store is not remotely possible to guarantee all stops are under five minutes, we're talking credit card swipe only. Even then a slow pump is going to be cutting it close.

- Pack all the food and drinks ahead of time, even drive through food is going to destroy your reason for living because no way you can get drive through and gas up in under 10-15 minutes let alone 5.

- Maybe everybody pees in bottles and takes a dump in a box, sounds like you have a big crew and getting everybody to pee and poop in 5 minutes is going to be tough even if you weren't pumping any gas. You might have to store the poop and pee inside the car unless you spot a dumpster you can throw it in out of the car window.

- No overnight hotel stops allowed. Most hotels you can charge an EV overnight and that would take admitting they are more convenient sometimes. Best to just not stop at all.

Or maybe the truth is stopping for gas, restroom and food is already more often a 10-40 minute thing and not actually always under this mythical five minutes. Especially traveling with a big family. Crazy talk, I know.

Not trying to be a jerk here, but since I do not own an EV, is it strange or takes some time planning a trip like this by fast charging locations? I mean, a trip from DM to Osage beach would be well within the range of an ICE or Hybrid vehicle only refueling once you get there. Is the savings on gas worth the extra time and planning?
Really the only difference is what map app you use. Instead of google or apple maps you need to use A Better Route Planner or Plug Share.

lol 40 minutes to stop and get gas/food? Come on, this is just as dumb as the complaints @1SEIACLONE has.

Agreed, but google maps is getting better on this front. You can tell it that you drive an electric vehicle and with Android Auto, it gives me estimate percentage battery remaining on arrival and return as well as some charging locations. I do all my charging at home though, so can't comment on the accuracy/quality of the charging locations it selects.

California, and especially southern California, isn't very representative of much of the country. But I hope you are right. I feel eventually the country will get there, but many Americans will need to be dragged kicking and screaming into the future.

Honestly, a week ago, this was me. an EV wasnt even on my radar

My wife's radar either. And we are picking up the Subaru Solterra on Friday.

I get it, you love your EV, great, enjoy instead of 5/10 minutes filling up with gas, driving a couple of hours and stopping for 20 minutes to get your next charge. Planning your route by where I can find the fastest charging stations and then hoping they are not being used and I set there waiting for an open one.

I have said over and over, EV have a great niche, fleet vehicles, driving around town and so forth. Going 1500 miles, sure it's possible, but also a huge pain in the ass. But to you, they are the best thing since sliced bread, living in the Mecca of charging stations in California, not always true here in Iowa or many other states.

Good, now that this is squared away, will you leave now?

I'm being just as genuine as you.

I need the details of how you and all these grandparents and grandkids drive across the country and never are stopped for longer than 5 minutes.

You're the NASCAR pit crew of Griswold Wally World tourists!

Tell us how you get it done, others would surely like to know. There has to be peeing in bottles involved.

I almost wish I still had a gas car because I'd want to time myself at gas stations to see how radically wrong this guy's promise of 5 minutes is, especially since he's talking about grandparents and grandchildren.

I think 15 minutes without any fast food is probably more typical. 30 minutes if somebody grabs mcDonalds or Subway, 40 minutes if the fast food isn't on the same site as the gas station. Like others have said, I go to the bathroom, grab a drink, take my dog to go to the bathroom...then about half the time when I'm done with that my charging is already done, other times I check my email for 10 minutes then it's done. The only kink in it at all is if there's a wait for a charger and I'm getting a lot better at avoiding that.

Here's something to think about.

Someone who has only owned a gas car lecturing about how horrible EVs are and why everyone hates them. (you and this luddite)

Someone who owned gas cars for 25 years and owned an EV for a few years talking about the positives and negatives of both. (the thoughtful people in the thread)

No one is lecturing about anything, why do you have to make **** up? The only thing you have stated is all the positives and non of the negatives. Hell maybe everyone should rush out now and buy an EV. Of course we do not have the infrastructure for it and Trump has cut most of the Biden bill to build it, but let's do it anyway.
