When to cheer for the Hawkeyes?

I look at it this way, last time Iowa had national success they tried to recruit elite players and ended up with the nationally ranked kids that slipped down to them and led to their falling off. Maybe this can happen again letting us grab the kids Iowa normally locks down.

I told a Hawk fan a while back that I would cheer for them under one condition. The condition was: if I would hear just ONE Hawk fan, whether it be in a group conversation, on a call-in show, to me personally, within the family, or anywhere acknowledge or admit how 'fortunate' they are to be in two divisions and not having to play any of the top four teams in the opposite division. Just to acknowledge, 'yes, we're pretty fortunate'. But no, not ONE. So, screw that...go Sparty. Looking at their division, they could be in this game for several years to come. Must be nice. Still frustrated Bowlsby and whomever in our conference won't budge on getting two more teams.

I have mixed feelings. A part of me knows that I will enjoy watching them lose tonigt. Another part says, well if they win then they will actually have something to talk about. Overall, it should be good for the state of Iowa. Then again, I will enjoy to watch them lose.

Okay, you got me, I really would never cheer for them. However, my team is out and I would like to watch the game. I also hate Michigan State.

If B1G adds two more teams they will just move Indiana to the West and put the two new teams in the East.

I still don't believe they're for real. I've said that if they beat MSU tonight, I'll believe it and they deserve to be in the CFP. Still don't know that I'd actively cheer for them, though.

Had someone over Turkey day (former student, and student manager under Ferentz) tell me they were over ranked. I mentioned how they play well together in a way that could beat any of the teams from the other division in a one-game situation like tonight, but would likely lose 2-3 if they were all on the schedule. He was in complete agreement.

If Iowa State were in the same position, I'd have a blast with it regardless of schedule (heck, 7 wins wasn't too much to ask with this year's), and you know that there would be plenty of ISU fans that would think ISU was in the mix with the blue bloods, just like in basketball where there's probably plenty who think ISU is some sort of shoe in for the Final Four.

That said, I think Iowa by something like 2 TDs tonight just because of how deceptive they are. I can see it being similar to Nebraska where it's sort of back and forth but Iowa scores on some big plays late. And I'll be glad I'm not on social media because I get annoyed just thinking about how annoying and belligerent old friends are.

Iowa fan here. I know most of you want Iowa to get rolled today but if the roles were reversed I would be rooting like hell for ISU to make the playoff. Either way, Iowa is perceived as a really good team this year so them winning more isn't going to change their perception that drastically. I think it's awesome for the state whenever we can get some exposure.

I admit that I'm a bit torn. I want to hate the Hawkeyes at all costs, but is there a point when I should actually cheer for them? For instance, the Huskers will be insufferable if they win. And who wouldn't like to see the Buckeyes crushed? Or take down a top SEC team?

At some point, as much as I hate to admit it, I think it is good for the whole state for the Hawkeyes to do well (and worse for the state if they have a high profile choke like us in BB last year). I'm just not sure what that point is. I don't think I can cheer for them unless they do make it to the playoff. At that point, a win is good for the state, even if it makes Hawk fans even more insufferable. But who can handle them being even more insufferable? I may give myself a ban for even considering it.

Is is there a point when any of you will cheer for the Hawkeyes?

Never.

But you see, there's plenty of your Hawk peers that wouldn't agree with you. So, do you want to be that one and only fan that will 'acknowledge' you are fortunate to be in the division format and not have to play the top four teams in the other division? And, fortunate you don't have to play Ohio State like Michigan found out last week? Or does your 57 yd. last second field goal to beat Pitt, your only win over the present CFP ranked team Northwestern (who lost 38-0 the week before you) , or maybe your last 3 min. to finally get a lead on a below avg. 3-win ISU team, mean your a top 4 team in the country? I think you'll win today, maybe by double digits, but I still don't buy you will be one of the top 4 teams in the country. But that's not how this thing works.

I don't get this line of thought. Why would you forgive a 12 games of beating up on well below average competition? They don't have to battle MSU and then go play OSU next week and then MU the next week. That is the real test and they don't have to pass it.

Has hell frozen over? I doubt it especially with climate warming.

Exactly. Beating Michigan State is a 1-game golden opportunity that any team could win. Doesn't prove top 4, but it is what it is. Any bets they sack Conner Cook early and he re-injures his shoulder? Its been that dream of a season. Nebraska and Wisconsin breaking in new coaching staffs didn't hurt either. Having said that, they deserve credit for not slipping up regardless the opponent.

Anybody that cheers for Iowa isn't a true cyclone fan. Them making the playoff would pretty much guarantee we will never get a recruit over them

This thread has helped solidify my conviction to cheer against Iowa today. Iowa fans have become even more insufferable in recent weeks. If they make the playoffs, we will never, ever, ever ... hear the end of it. Even if we win the NCAA tournament in basketball, they will still insist on talking about the football playoffs.

So, now I'm going to make a prediction about how they lose. King is getting lots of praise, but I thought he played in a very undisciplined manner against us, made several mistakes, but then made a couple of really good plays at the end that are all people remember. I'm hoping that King gets burned early and often as he tries to force big plays. Or maybe even better, Sparty totally burns him on the last play of the game with a trick play like they did against Notre Dame a few years ago. Nah, not the last thing, because I don't even want it to be close at the end. I just hope they burn him good on a play early in the game to establish a lead.

Now, let's play the game and end the Hawkeye fantasy!
