In 3 games, our Tight Ends have a combined 1 reception (Chase Allen, 9 yds. vs. Iowa). It will be imperative that we use these guys before the year is over. Why the limited use so far? Thoughts???
Agree completely. I hate hearing EVERY single year from coaches, going back decades, how this will be the year we start using the TE. Never happens. And it can be used so effectively as another weapon to exploit a defense, yet we never don't do it. I don't get it.
We're not a pro-style team. Everyone just get over it already. Our TE is either blocking because we're running or he's out wide with 3-4 other better targets. Do the math. Stop listening to Rag hacks . Win.
Here's a play that OU ran against Ohio State that I think we need to add, or at least something like it. You could throw it to the TE, or even a slot WR, just slanting into the vacancy left by LBs coming up to stop the run. The play I'm talking about is at the 2:33 mark in the video....
Remember, Allen and Soehner are only redshirt freshman. No reason to force it with the other skill players we have. It seems like we have used more TE sets this year, but mostly in running situations. I am sure we will see a passing option out of those sets at sometime in the future.
In my fantrax league of over a hundred college teams, there are almost no decent tight ends for fantasy points. They appeared to have become blockers and not much else in football.
Well, due to our early success with our receivers, its true our TE's have had a non-existent role in the passing game. However, because we ARE Iowa State, its inevitable that bad QB play, WR's getting locked down, injuries to WR's, a sand storm at JTS, etc....will require us to use our TE's. Are they capable? Hope CMC is repping them in practice.....Winter is coming...
Very obviously our most talented TE are still under class men. I think we are seeing plenty of stretch on the defenses with our more than adequate WR corps. Kolar, Soehner, Allen. It's coming.
I think it's less about getting specific players involved, as it is getting the TE position involved on a schematic level. Adding in another layer of plays that the defense has to think about should never be considered a bad thing. And it shouldn't matter if you're taking away targets from certain players. If there are plays that are effective against a defense and help us win, it doesn't matter who is catching it.

Well, the Register guys are MORE familiar with Iowa's offense.
Might be some opportunities on short and goal when it looks like TE is blocking and we are running or even in OT time as a surprise on something not being keyed on to stop?
It is about getting the ball to your best play makers in situations they can be successful. The TEs are not at the top of the list yet. We have used the TEs more in the run game. No doubt their are many plays out of those same sets that are designed to get the TEs open for a pass. If the defense gives us that, I am sure we will use it.
While I don't agree that this is a problem at all (we are scoring 40 points a game) I couldn't resist this as it popped into my head as soon as I saw "missing".
Do I need to mention that I am a little bit bored this morning?
The playbook will be opening up now that we've reached conference play. Not that I think it's imperative we use TE's more, but I think we'll be seeing them more down the stretch.
ISU is putting up over 40 point a game. Not really concerned about the offense at this point in time. They will probably use the TE a little more later in the season, but with the size of ISU's WRs, they already have the big bodies to catch the ball over the middle.
