If I still had a 1968 chevy halfton or my 1977 cutlass, I would change my oil. Super easy to get to, easy to get under the vehicle, etc.

Changing the oil in my old camry is easy too, but it's hard to get under the vehicle, hard to reach the filter, etc. Plus I don't like spilling oil in my garage which always happens.

Anything Automotive in Clive does mine for $23 which includes all the little things (air filter, washer fluid, etc.). They seem to do a good job.

Try and find an auto shop that burns oil. I'd be shocked if there weren't a few in town. That's how I used to do it back in the day.

Since most of you it seems change your own oil, how and where do you dispose of the old oil?
The local O'reillys has a tank for recycled oil. I assume that most of the locations have the setup.

Walmart Tire & Lube accepts used oil. I don't know if it's a requirement that you buy the oil there, but their prices are great so I wouldn't see why you wouldn't.

I ended up getting in touch with the owner of Westside Auto in Clive, and he said that I could bring in my own oil/filter, so I plan on giving them a go. I've heard they are a good shop, but I'll see I suppose.

I like changing my own because it's fun to get dirty once in a while and that way I know it's actually getting done, as opposed to them just popping a new filter on and topping off the oil.

Just wanted to throw this out there...once a year I send a sample to Black Stone Labs. For about $30 they will analyze your oil for minerals/deposits and tell you if you are having any major engine wear problems. They also analyze TBN and tell you if you can go longer on your oil change intervals. I sent in a sample after 6,000 miles on my wife's minivan and they said the oil was still in good shape and I could easily go 7,500 miles between changes (this was on Val full synthetic).

Here's the website: Blackstone Labs

Might save you some money and some cold afternoons in the garage!

With synthetic you should get 10,000 out if it, if you change the at 5,000.

I use it to burn brush piles. But then again I don't live in town where neighbors might have a problem with flames 15 feet tall. :biglaugh:

You may be right. I am guessing when I send a 7500 mile sample in next time they will tell me I can bump it up again. I see Fram now makes a 10,000 mile filter.

You can track where my oil gets changed by my income level. I started out changing my own oil, then moved onto JiffyLube and places like that and now I take it to Willis Lexus. Certainly not the cheapest way to go but one of the things I like is that I can drop it off on the way to work, get a loaner car, and pick it up after work. I refilled the window washer fluid a couple weeks ago and I can't even remember the last time before that I popped the hood on a car.

On my motorcycles, before I got rid of them a couple years ago, I always changed my own oil. I guess they were more of a hobby so I didn't mind taking an afternoon every now and then and pretending I had mechanical ability.

I've actually had great interaction with Hansen Sinclair on the NE corner of Lincoln Way/Duff. They've been extremely helpful the few times I've needed it.
And, Mark is a great ISU supporter!
