Info I got was he didn't get many reps on D due to conditioning. School would be a 3A in Iowa so 2 way play is kinda expected out of your top players.

Guessing we targeted him as a DT from camp rather than film. I believe he could be really good, he just has a ways to go.
I played QB/DL in high school. I think what your source stated is being a little harsh on Howard. Could certainly be true, but look at it this way: DL is hard on a body. Sometimes really hard. Imagine going through a full game of beatings on a DL and then also having to run the offense, pass and run the ball. You never leave the field.

It can be done if you're a DB/QB, because the amount of hits you take as a DB is so much less. DL is something different (and so is playing QB)

Howard will need a year, coaching connection in KC says conditioning has been an issue for him.

I doubt conditioning will be too big of an issue in college, since it's not like we're asking him to start at QB and DT.

Playing both ways is tough to do at the high school level when you're 180 pounds, let alone 280. It's impressive that he played any DL this season.

As some have already mentioned, I'm very curious to see where Johnny Wilson slots in. He is another guy we've heard the staff is high on and could be in the rotation somewhere as early as next year

...Singleton feels like the higher ceiling guy the coaching staff really likes.
Let’s put it this way. Not remembering his exact words, but Matt Campbell said that there are two athletic freaks in this freshman class. T.J. Tampa, whom we all know has around a 40” vertical—and J.R. Singleton.

The last person to be given that “freak” designation was Will McDonald. For further emphasis, consider that guys like Breece and Darien Porter showed up between those two classes.

Lee played 264 snaps this year and graded out well. Slightly better than Enyi even. He's the main guy at DT for the next 2 years.

It'd be nice to get Josh Bailey back as a depth/bridge the gap piece but Singleton feels like the higher ceiling guy the coaching staff really likes.
Isiah Lee is the most underrated player on the starting roster in my opinion.

Always graded out extremely well by Pro Football Focus against the run. I get it that Singleton should play plenty, but Isiah Lee is an anchor, massive man who is so stout on the run attack.

I may have been called a freak before, but don't ever remember being called an "athletic freak"! :)

So now it will likely be a Enyi and Lee as the two main stays with Singleton as the depth piece. Maybe Johnny Wilson starts seeing the field as depth at SDE too.

Howard Brown and Tyler Onyedim likely get a year at least to develop.

I get that Bailey does not need to share with the fan base why he is leaving. That said, why is he leaving? Does he think more exposure in a different scheme will help garner NFL attention? I do not get it. You have a chance at a title, you are getting a serious amount of reps, why leave? Not to mention leaving your teammates would be hard to do.

It's just playing time plain and simple. He got to play some at a very high FBS level with his brother. Now he wants to be an every down guy. Good for him.

Losing good players because they can't get enough PT isn't a bad thing.

I suspect that part of it had to do with both he and Bankston looking over their shoulders at J.R. Singleton. They weren’t going to beat out Lee, and the younger guy was going to be taking away that “serious amount of reps”.

Maybe so, but it sure seems like it would be easier to stay.

Bankston left before the bowl game... it does not appear to be playing time related. More likely off the field issue of some kind. But obviously I don't know.

I would have loved Bankston back. But Uwazurike coming back is huge. I did not remember seeing Singleton. But great that he got some snaps. We will need him in the rotation next year.

Umm, no. What it blatantly obviously appears to be is that he wanted to start next year. Did you pay attention to what Campbell actually said?

Maybe Latrell even asked CMC if he could start the bowl game, and was told no. For all we know, he was hurt and would have missed the bowl game anyway.

No reason to make assumptions that disparage a young man’s character, entirely in the absence of other information.

I feel like Lee will get (and has earned) a majority of the snaps. Singleton will rotate in with him. Guessing Brown will get at least his 4 games in if not more depending on injuries. Then Uwazarike, Robertson, Wilson can flip inside on passing downs.

Yes, he’s currently listed there, but already at 6’2” 272, he may grow out of it. We’ll see what happens come Spring ball.

That kind of weight at DE is not a problem as long as you still have quickness. Wilson was listed at 260 coming in so he has only added less than 5% onto his weight from high school. And some of that is muscle no doubt.

Until we know how our 2021 signees at DT and DE pan out, it is too soon to say where Wilson is needed the most. But he was our only DE recruit for 2020 so it would be nice to keep him there I would think.
